Democrats and Republicans in House Vote down Immediate Withdrawal Resolution

Democrats and Republicans in the House of Representatives were united Friday in a vote against the House against an immediate withdrawal from Iraq. While the vote was largely staged as a Republican response to engineer support for their strategy after it came under attack from a formerly enthusiastic supporter of the war, Representative John Murtha, who called for an immediate withdrawal from Iraq. The Democrats opposition to the resolution is indicative of their overall failure to oppose the Bush administration’s policy on Iraq. Rather than supporting a resolution calling for the withdrawal of US troops from Iraq, the Democrats instead dismissed the resolution as a “ploy” of the Republican Party and voted to continue their support of the Iraq war.
