San Francisco Voters Pass Anti-Recruiting Ballot Initiative

Voters in Tuesday’s election in San Francisco passed a ballot initiative against military recruiting on high school and college campuses by a 60% to 40% vote. The initiative, dubbed “College not Combat” does not ban military recruiters from campuses as such a move would jeopardize federal funding, but was rather a formal declaration that the city of San Francisco opposes “the federal government’s use of public schools to recruit students for service in the military” and that the city should examine ways to fund scholarships and job training programs that would lessen the appeal of the military for young people.
