At the Michigan Democratic Party’s state convention in Detroit during the weekend of August 27 and 28th, the Party passed a resolution supporting the “phased redeployment” of US troops currently stationed in Iraq. The resolution, like others passed recently by county parties in Michigan, affirms the support of the Michigan Democratic Party for United States House Democrats call for a “phased redeployment” of troops in Iraq and support for Michigan Senator Carl Levin’s call for an end to President Bush’s open-ended commitment in Iraq. The Democrats have defined “phased redeployment” as needing to begin before the end of 2006, transitioning forces from Iraq to a “limited mission focusing on counter-terrorism,” providing training and logistical support for Iraqi security forces, and the protection of US personnel in Iraq. It further stipulates that Iraqis need take the “necessary” steps towards achieving a “broad-based and sustainable political settlement” including constitutional power-sharing amendments, disarmament of militias, and convening an international conference to obtain multinational involvement in financing reconstruction and economic development in Iraq. While the resolution mentions the number of US soldiers killed and wounded in Iraq, it makes not mention of the total number of estimated Iraqi civilian casualties.
