Michigan Democratic Senator Debbie Stabenow voted on Friday in support of the further militarization of the United States-Mexico border. Senator Stabenow, voted in favor of the anti-immigrant Secure Fence Act of 2006 which will create a 700-mile fence along the US-Mexico border and increase surveillance and the authority of border patrol officials. Critics are arguing that the bill implements harsh anti-immigrant measures while ignoring the issue of comprehensive immigration reform. Michigan’s other Senator, Democrat Carl Levin, was one of only 19 Senators voting against the bill. Last month, West Michigan area representatives Vern Ehlers and Pete Hoekstra voted in support of the bill. Stabenow’s vote in support of this legislation came on the same day that she also voted in support of President Bush’s model for using military courts to try non-citizen detainees in the “war on terror.”
