Truth can be stranger than fiction: how Hollywood mirrors the status quo

Posted: July 31st, 2007 | Author: jeff |

As the dog days of summer drag on you might wonder what do people who monitor the media do in the summer. The news media has been kind of slow with not much more than the ongoing war in Iraq and the always-exciting horse race coverage of presidential candidates breaking records for money raised this far from the actual election. The only real junk food news has been on Paris Hilton’s criminal career. Therefore, I am pretty much left with other forms of media to consume and critique and what better media to discuss than Hollywood’s summer blockbusters.

While I don’t subscribe to the notion that entertainment media is just an artistic reflection of the real world, I do think that there are kernels of reality that can be found on the big screen. These reflections are written in mid-July, so if you were hoping for comments on The Simpsons Movie or Balls of Fury, I’m sorry to disappoint. This writer hasn’t even seen the new Harry Potter film, so there won’t be comments on adolescent wizards and dark lords. In fact, I am going to limit my comments to just two of the so-called summer blockbusters – The Fantastic Four and Transformers.

As a kid I grew up watching The Fantastic Four on Saturday mornings and Ben Grimm was always my favorite, no doubt because he just used brute strength to take care of the bad guys. However, it seems that in the movie version of the cartoon/comic book Ben has become to brunt of jokes, the not-so-bright one. His counterpart, Johnnie (flame on) is the egomaniac, forever seduced by the fame and always looking to woo any woman who crosses his path. Johnnie’s inflated ego takes on a new role in the latest edition of The Fantastic Four, when the flying torch becomes a pitchman for corporate America.

Early on in the movie there is a scene where Johnnie enters the room and presents a Fantastic Four uniform with numerous corporate logos on the front. His rationale is that it could be another way of financing their operation. Not surprisingly, this is the selling point of much corporate underwriting/sponsorship…to “help” fund fledgling enterprises like public schools across the country. Well, Johnnie’s idea is quickly dismissed, not because anyone objects to the idea, rather that they are currently confronted with the destruction of the world and maybe corporate sponsorship is not quite as urgent. A bit later in the film there is a scene where Johnnie and Ben are in a bar feeling a bit depressed because no solution to stopping the Silver Surfer has been found. They are talking about what they would do with their last minutes on earth and right in front of them are bottles of Dos XX beer. Now at first glance it is not unusual for adults to be drinking beer in a bar, however when you think about the broader audience this product placement takes on a different meaning.

According to the Center on Alcohol Marketing and Youth nearly $5 billion dollars was spent on alcohol advertising on TV in the Grand Rapids/Kalamazoo/Battle Creek market alone between 2001-2005, with the bulk of the advertising on channels that target underage viewers – UPN, Comedy Central and VH1. Alcohol ads in movies has also increased in recent years, particularly in films that target teen/college age audiences. The makers of Dos XX are not stupid and recognize that this is a great way to target underage audiences with their product. If the guy that says “Its clobbering time” drinks Dos XX, well…you get the point. It’s not that people will automatically drink Dos XX, but it does normalize drinking, especially if super heroes do it.

A more blatant form of hyper-commercialism appeared in the movie Transformers. Every one of the “good” robots transforms into a GM car or truck. The main character of the movie drives a Camaro, but there is also a Hummer, an 18-wheeler, a Pontiac Solstice, a GM truck, and a Mustang. All throughout the movie there are tight shots of the transformation so that the logos or names of the vehicles are prominent. In fact, GM used the release of the film to plug its own summer campaign called the “Transform Your Ride Sale.” The campaign is using an “integrated marketing program including 30-second television spots, 60- and 30-second radio spots, print advertising, digital online advertising, Web site homepage grabs and gaming plus other activities. The television advertising, by McCann Erickson Detroit, features a variety of vehicles, including the Chevrolet Silverado and Cobalt, Buick Lucerne, Pontiac G6 and GMC Yukon. The spots incorporate actual scenes from the movie and are directed by Michael Bay,” according to a June 25 Press Release from GM. As a side note, it is interesting that all the vehicles feature are high performance…which is a code word for low gas mileage. Just weeks before the film was released Congress voted on new CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency) standards for the auto industry. The US Congress was lobbied heavily by General Motors and other car manufactures in order to keep the current fuel efficiency standards low. The new standards voted on in early June only requires cars to get 27 mpg and trucks 22.5mpg. So much for combating global warming.

There were two robots that did not turn into GM products. The robot Blackout turned into a Sikorsky helicopter and Starscream transformed into a Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor, according to the film’s website. So it seems that the US defense industry also got in on the act of advertising in this film. It’s ironic, that both Sikorsky and Lockheed Martin, companies that make their living off of US taxpayer subsidized weapons contracts and sell their military hardware around the world, would need to feature their products in a film. It’s not that people are gonna run out and buy an F-22 Raptor, but it does serve an important role in that it provides a popular forum for US military hardware to be shown in a positive light.

Indeed, one could argue that the film Transformers was a big promotional piece for the US military. At a time when the US military occupies Iraq and Afghanistan, the film portrays them as being under attack from “outside” forces. The US military is only portrayed as defensive throughout the film and in the end triumphant because of the courage of members of an elite commando squad. At one point in the film the military even recruits young computer programmers who help them decipher the robot code. One could say this was an appeal to the newest generation that their computer hacking skills can serve the interests of the nation. What better way to attract potential recruits than the use of a summer blockbuster. This is certainly in line with the US military’s recruiting strategy of using video games and other popular media as tactics to lure young people into the armed forces. As long as there is no draft and the US continues the so-called “War on Terrorism,” the Pentagon will continue to employee a variety of tactics to get young people to fight their wars.

“Eye on Hate” Raises Concern about another Racist Event in Kalamazoo on August 4

Posted: July 27th, 2007 | Author: edcutlip |

On the Thursday, July 26 edition of “Eye on Hate” radio, again featured a lengthy discussion of the upcoming white supremacist rally in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Cochran, who is a former member of the Aryan Nations who left the racist movement in the early 1990s, dedicates his show to exposing organized racists.

He set the context for the program by explaining that Michigan has around 20 identifiable white supremacist groups and that they are a part of what is essentially a “flourishing” movement around the country. Cochran explained that organized white supremacy in Michigan can be traced back to the late 1920s with Father Charles Coughlin who hosted a racist radio program. The Klan and neo-Nazi groups maintained a low-level presence until the 1960s according to Cochran, when a man named Bob Miles of Howell–who was connected with Aryan Nations–was eventually convicted for bombing school busses in an effort to stop desegregation. After Miles death in the early 1990s Cochran asserted that he thought the movement had waned, but in recent years there has been an upsurge in activity with leaders like James Wickstrom, neo-Nazis in Cadillac, Michigan, and a national rally in Lansing.

Cochran explained that the tactic of attacking “black on white” crime has been effective one for white supremacists in terms of getting them media coverage at past rallies. He emphasized that Turner–who is the main organizer of the rally–is dangerous in that he encourages violence but that he himself is not violent. He argued that the rally will be entirely surrounded by police, but that the bigger threat to the community might be neo-Nazi organizer Bill White who has also announced that he is coming to Kalamazoo. Cochran expressed concern that White might take his “activism” to the streets. In the past, this has included a variety of stunts designed to gain media attention–especially the marching of racists through neighborhoods of color. Cochran argued that anti-racists in Kalamazoo must have a plan for dealing with White if he attempts to march through an African-American neighborhood in Kalamazoo. Cochran also explained that when he was a racist organizer, the white supremacist groups with whom he worked rarely returned to areas where they were directly opposed and instead focused on areas where little challenge was made to their organizing efforts. He further stressed the importance of organizing for the long-term and not just focusing on the fourth of August.

Cochran reminded his audience that this was the third time that Turner has organized a rally against so-called “black on white” crime. Two previous rallies–dubbed “flops” by Cochran were held in Knoxville, Tennessee. During the first of these two rallies one of the speakers for the Kalamazoo event–Alex Linder–was arrested. Both events were overshadowed by protests organized by the Knoxville Anti-Racist Action and other groups.

Michigan Against White Supremacy Organizes to Stop Racist Rally in Kalamazoo

Posted: July 26th, 2007 | Author: edcutlip |

072607-nazis_pull_up.gif

The group Michigan Against White Supremacy has been busy organizing to confront the upcoming white supremacist event in Kalamazoo. That gathering of white supremacists, Klan members, and other organized racists and their supporters has been the targeted by Michigan Against White Supremacy for the past two weeks. Among the approaches that the group has undertaken is a letter writing campaign, talking to hotel owners that might be housing the white supremacists, and planning for a protest to counter the white supremacists’ message.

Their website, online at maws.wordpress.com, has a summary of their discussions with hotel owners about the presence of white supremacists in Kalamazoo:

On Friday, July 20, Michigan Against White Supremacy went to 18 different motels in the Kalamazoo area to distribute informational packets that warned motel staff of the hate speech and violent nature of individuals who are scheduled to attend the racist rally being held by Hal Turner on August 4. Many of the managers and staff that they spoke to were very receptive and assured that the information would be passed on to the rest of the motel’s employees. Some of the motel employees asked about the MAWS web page and several stated that the racist hate speech organizers would not be allowed to stay at their motel. Several motels had been visited by police officers and other concerned individuals, and had received a list of names of people who were likely attending the rally.

Visit their website for more organizing updates.

Call to Action: Oppose White Supremacists in Kalamazoo, Michigan

Posted: July 25th, 2007 | Author: edcutlip |

The following “call to action” announcing plans to protest the white supremacist event in Kalamazoo, Michigan comes from the group Michigan Against White Supremacy:

Call to Action: Oppose White Supremacists in Kalamazoo, Michigan

On Saturday, August 4, the racist radio talk show host Hal Turner is holding what he is hoping will be a major white supremacist event in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Turner’s event, dubbed a “Rally Against Black Gang Terrorism,” will feature speakers from various Ku Klux Klan groups, a pastor from the racist Christian Identity religion, and various racists not affiliated with any organized group. Moreover, invitations have been extended to nearly every organized white supremacist group from the Aryan Nations to White Revolution. Far from expressing concern about any issues affecting people in Kalamazoo, Hal Turner’s event is designed to act as a means of recruiting more people into the white supremacist movement and advancing their racist agenda.

Michigan Against White Supremacy is organizing a counter event because we believe that the white supremacists cannot be ignored. If we choose to ignore the white supremacists, they will be emboldened. If allowed to rally unopposed, the white supremacists will believe that they have the support of the community to enact their program of racist terror. Many of the white supremacists coming to Kalamazoo have advocated violence to achieve their political goals–expressing support for acts ranging from the “lynching” of African-Americans in Kalamazoo to the mass execution of Jewish people. We must stand up and oppose white supremacists as one of the many ways in which we can and should stand in solidarity and mutual struggle with oppressed groups.

We encourage people to protest in a way that effectively will silence the white supremacists’ message. In addition, we support people using a variety of methods and tactics to oppose the presence of white supremacists in Kalamazoo, provided that their actions are well-thought out and take into consideration their potential impact on the local community and other counter-demonstrators.

Meet at Bronson Park (South Rose and W. South St) in Kalamazoo, Michigan at 12:00pm. Brings signs, banners, noisemakers, and anything else that will help make it clear that white supremacy is not welcome in Kalamazoo, Michigan, or anywhere else.

For more information, please consult our website at http://maws.wordpress.com

In solidarity,

- Michigan Against White Supremacy

Author Daniel Levitas Speaks at Ford Museum on Rightwing Domestic Terrorism

Posted: July 25th, 2007 | Author: edcutlip |

On Tuesday evening, reporter and author Daniel Levitas delivered a lecture at the Gerald R. Ford Museum in downtown Grand Rapids on domestic terrorism. Building off his book The Terrorist Next Door: The Militia Movement and the Radical Right, Levitas focused his lecture on rightwing domestic terrorism and the groups in which they are involved.

Levitas began his talk by recounting the Oklahoma City bombing 12 years ago that killed 160 people and wounded 500. Levitas reminded the audience that at the time of the attack, many commentators in the media declared that it was an act of “Mideast terrorism” despite the fact that it would later turn out to be an attack staged by domestic terrorists of the radical right. Levitas explained that the radical right movement had been building for several years without any attention from law enforcement officials and that the attack was a surprise to law enforcement officials.

Despite the fact that law enforcement officials were taken by surprise, a radical rightwing movement had been organizing for several years and had been building a movement around the idea that the government was waging war against them. The militia movement had thousands of members around the country, including some 10,000 members in Michigan, the majority of whom were stockpiling weapons and supplies for what they thought would be a future invasion of the United States by the “New World Order.” At the same time, these groups saw the actions of the United States government, including the siege at Waco, the shooting of a white supremacist’s wife at Ruby Ridge, and the passage of the Brady Bill–which they saw as an attempt to disarm America and make it vulnerable to an attack by the “New World Order”–as evidence of a war against them.

Despite some success in prosecuting militia and radical right groups in the wake of Oklahoma City by the government, these groups have continued to organize, even as many of them have given up on broad-based movements. According to Levitas, many white supremacist groups have given up on the government, essentially viewing it as “lost” to “non-whites,” Jews, and immigrants. This was clear immediately after 9/11, when many white supremacists applauded the attack on the “Zionist Occupying Government”–commonly referred to as “ZOG”–and cheered the killing of 10,000 “ZOGites.” White supremacists such as Hardy Lloyd of the World Church of the Creator, a white supremacist group, cheered the attack and talked about the need to get guns ready for the revolution. A leader of the neo-Nazi National Alliance applauded the attacks as well, stating “we may not want them marrying our daughters…but anyone who is willing to drive a plane into a building to kill Jews is alright by me.”

Levitas explained to the audience that while receiving much less attention in the media, arrests of white supremacist and radical right individuals have increased since 9/11 and have made up a significant number of those arrested on terrorism charges. He cited two examples, Eric Rudolph and William Krar, both of whom identified with the radical right. Eric Rudolph, who set off a pipe bomb at the Olympics in Atlanta and who attacked people at a family planning clinic, attacked because he believe the government had lost its authority because of abortion and tolerance of homosexuality. William Krar, a militia member from Texas, had built a chemical weapon–a sodium-cyanide bomb–like the ones the government fears may be built by Al Qaida. Yet, despite the destructive power of the bomb, the 5,000 rounds of ammunition, 100 pipe bombs, and the neo-Nazi literature that he was arrested with, the government never made Krar’s arrest a serious issue.

While it is easy to focus on a particularly violent fringe of the radical right, Levitas argued that the real problem lies where the ideologies of the radical right tap into widely held sentiments and stereotypes. To illustrate this point, Levitas explained that 14% of Americans hold anti-Semitic stereotypes, including the idea that Jews care only for themselves, that Jews control Wall Street, and that Jews killed Christ. In regards to immigration, Levitas explained that a significant portion of Americans responded to a survey stating that it “bothers” them to see immigrants succeed while native-born United States citizens are struggling. Levitas also cited two recent votes that showed widespread voter support for racist policies–a vote in 2000 in Alabama to remove an amendment from the constitution banning whites and African-Americans from marrying and a 2002 vote in Oregon to remove language in the state constitution saying that “negroes” could not enter into contracts or hold property. In both cases, a significant portion of the voters–40% and 31% respectively–voted to keep the racist language in the constitution. To seriously address the threat of radical rightwing movements, Levitas argued that people need to address the underlying ideologies rather than focusing purely on a law enforcement strategy.

Recent Statements by Michigan Senator Carl Levin on the Iraq War Assign Responsibility for Violence to the Iraqis

Posted: July 23rd, 2007 | Author: edcutlip |

photo of carl levin

Over the past week, Michigan Democratic Party Senator Carl Levin has made numerous statements about the war, the majority of which come from Levin’s discussion of a recently blocked measure that he proposed to withdraw some troops from Iraq by April of 2008. That proposal, largely reported as a measure that called for the “withdrawal” of United States soldiers from Iraq, would have left an unknown number of soldiers in Iraq to conducted unspecified operations to combat “terrorism” in Iraq.

In explaining his support for this proposal, Levin has made it clear that his concern lies more with maintaining the United States’ imperial power, rather than demonstrating a genuine concern for the Iraqi people. For the past several years, Levin’s statements (1, 2) have repeatedly called for the Iraqi people and government to make “difficult” political decisions while asking little of the United States, who ultimately bears responsibility for the current situation and violence in Iraq. In a recent statement on July 20 titled “The Only Hope for Iraq,” Levin blamed the violence in Iraq on Iraqi leaders, charging that Iraqi leaders “dawdle” rather than address the bloodshed in Iraq:

Our brave servicemen and women are dying and being wounded while Iraqi leaders dither…. Ending our open-ended commitment is the only way that we can force the Iraqi leaders to make the necessary political compromises. That is the only hope for success in Iraq.

In the statement, Levin assigns all responsibility to the Iraqi leaders, rather than considering the United States’ role as an occupying force and how that might motivate a violent reaction from those living under the indignities of a military occupation.

In a floor statement on the measure made on July 18, Levin asserted that withdrawing United States troops from Iraq was the only way that the United States could “force” “Iraqi leaders to act.” Levin declared that “just about everybody now agrees that there is no military solution in Iraq and that the only way to end the violence is for the Iraqi political leaders to settle their difference,” again ignoring the role of the United States in motivating violence. Levin’s comments, without addressing the origins of the “violence” in Iraq, promote the idea that the Iraqi people are predisposed to killing each other without reason.

Levin’s assigning of blame exclusively to the Iraqis should raise concern in the antiwar movement, as should his recent comments on “the surge.” In a “colloquy” with John Warner posted on his website, Levin spoke favorably about Bush’s recent escalation of the war:

Even though I had misgivings about the surge, I put those aside once the President had made a decision to go forward. I wish to support the troops, and they are carrying out this mission. I think there is a strong chance there will be some measure of achievement of the surge militarily.

Of course, there are have been no indications that “the surge” is making any kind of progress in Iraq, and indeed there has been talk that a much talked about report on the success of “the surge,” originally scheduled for September, may not be ready until November.

Racist to Kalamazoo: “Maybe its time… to spay an neuter blacks”

Posted: July 23rd, 2007 | Author: edcutlip |

photo of hal turner

The racist radio show host Hal Turner, who is organizing an August 4 white supremacist event in Kalamazoo, Michigan at which a variety of Ku Klux Klan members and others involved in the organized white supremacist movement, has issued a new “Message to NAACP and other Blacks in Kalamazoo” that makes his true feelings towards African-Americans clear. Rather than addressing his false “concern” over alleged “black crime” in Kalamazoo, Turner’s latest website posting provides further proof that he is using the rally as an attempt to steer concern over crime in a racist direction.

In comments made on his website on July 10, Turner claimed that his rally has been successful in pushing the Kalamazoo to address “black crime.” Turner has taken credit for the Kalamazoo City Manager’s recent claims that Kalamazoo is at the crossroads of “civility and peace” and “full-scale gang violence.” Turner has claimed that his rally is changing policy and that police are now willing to consider “stepped-up” law enforcement to address “crime”–some of which might result in the city being considered “racial profiling.” Some white supremacists have even asserted that the police will be “on their side” at the rally, despite the fact that the Kalamazoo chief of police has made two public calls for the community to ignore Turner’s rally.

Of course, Turner really has no concern for the citizens of Kalamazoo and is only interested in using his rally as a means of furthering the agenda of the white supremacist movement and brining in new recruits. In his July 20 “Message to NAACP and other Blacks in Kalamazoo,” Turner says that the Kalamazoo Chief of Police is telling the NAACP and African-Americans to because “he knows your people cannot control themselves.” In the statement, Turner goes on to refer to African-Americans using terms such as “animalistic,” “savages,” “sub-human,” “beasts,” and “bucks.” Turner, who advocated “lynching” African-Americans in Kalamazoo to address the problem, has once again called for violence, stating:

We spay and neuter dogs and cats for that kind of rampant reproduction, maybe its time to treat you like animals and spay and neuter blacks!

Turner claims that he is going to Kalamazoo to “speak truth” to the community. Turner says that he and his fellow white supremacists are going to:

…stand up, in public, and tell everyone how we’re tired of the animalistic savages the Black community has turned loose on the streets. We’re going to look everyone right in the eye and talk about how we’re tired of the crime, the drugs and the violence these sub-human beasts perpetrate!

Statements by Turner referring to African-Americans as “sub-human” or threatening violence continue to be ignored by the media in Kalamazoo. The first article appearing about the rally ignored these issues, as have subsequent articles. The most recent article to do this was “

Michigan Klan Member to Speak at Kalamazoo White Supremacist Event

Posted: July 20th, 2007 | Author: edcutlip |

randy gray of the ku klux klan

When racist radio show host Hal Turner hosts his so-called “rally” in Kalamazoo on August 4, joining him on the list of speakers will be Midland County resident Randy Gray. Gray, on whom the Southern Poverty Law Center said it had no information in a recent article in Between the Lines, is a Ku Klux Klan organizer with the Knight’s Party. As Media Mouse has with Hal Turner and the Michigan-based Christian Identity pastor James Wickstrom, Media Mouse did some research into Randy Gray’s background and his involvement with the organized white supremacist movement.

Randy Gray is referenced in our Far Right in West Michigan Database due to a speech he delivered at the fiftieth anniversary of the Knight’s Party faction of the Ku Klux Klan. Gray spoke on the use of public access television as a recruiting and organizing tool for the white supremacist movement. Since 2005, Gray has filed the paperwork necessary to air the program “This is the Klan” on Midland Community Television. The program, hosted by Thomas Robb and Rachel Pendergraft, is a thirty minute program designed primarily for viewing on the Internet. Additionally, Gray maintains a website listing upcoming programs of interest to the racist movement. On that page the program “Yahweh’s Truth” by Michigan racist James Wickstrom is also listed.

Gray has attended various racist events with and without the Ku Klux Klan in recent years as well. He is quoted in a May 2004 article in the Tennessean in which the Ku Klux Klan planned a rally against a “Gay Day” event at the “Dollywood” theme park. Gray is quoted in the article stating that he organized the protest because the “Gay Day” event is “totally opposite of what theme parks are for,” expressing concern that somehow the theme park was no longer for “families.” That article also says that Gray has organized Klan rallies and protested city council meetings in Newport, Tennessee. Gray was twice (1, 2) kicked out of city council meetings for protesting the city’s permitting process in relation to a Klan protest against the Martin Luther King holiday.

In May of this year, Randy Gray organized a Midland, Michigan “Gas Out” protest (1, 2). In the footage available online Gray did not identify as a klansman, although it did appear linked on a white supremacist news site. The protests that Gray organized in relation to the “gas out” and the “Gay Day” at Dollywood show the degree to which white supremacist groups such as the Ku Klux Klan frequently try to steer other conservative movements in a racist direction. This tactic has recently been seen with the white supremacist movement’s focus on the murders of Channon Christian and Chris Newsom. The racist right has taken the murders and shifted made them a “racial” issue, despite police assertions that the murders had nothing to do with race and comments from Christian’s parents that race was not a motivating factor.

Despite this, the case has been taken up by a number of white supremacist groups and is being used as a means of instilling fear of African-Americans in white people. The rhetoric by the racist movement has claimed that the case is an example of “rampant” “black on white crime” that could mean “genocide” for the white race.

randy gray of the ku klux klan

Gray has taken an active role in promoting this view, both speaking at and promoting a rally held in June in Knoxville, Tennessee organized and attended by various white supremacist groups. In a video posted on YouTube to promote the rally, Gray made several racist statements. Gray asserted that America is “becoming a third world cesspool” and arguing that “it is time to wake up white people” to his view. Gray said that the video:

…is an invitation to all of our white brothers and sisters in the United States or in the world, this is an invitation to you to come to Knoxville, TN June 16 from 1 to 3 at the court house and the reason why we are doing this is because we are protesting the black on white crimes that are happening to our people in the United States of America and the world and the media cover-up.

Gray attempted to use fear of allegedly rampant crime epidemic to promote racist conclusions. In the video, Gray holds up a copy of a booklet called “The Color of Crime” by the “New Century Foundation” that purports to prove that African-Americans are more likely to commit violent crimes than white people. However, Gray fails to tell the viewer that the New Century Foundation publishes American Renaissance, a racist publication that has historically functioned as a vehicle for “intellectual” racists and white supremacists to argue and attempt to prove the alleged genetic and moral inferiority of people of color. Gray argues that:

It’s time that people wake up and realize diversity and multiculturalism is a plague on our society. It’s been a plague ever since it started in this country.

randy gray of the ku klux klan

Finally, like the other white supremacists joining Gray at Hal Turner’s upcoming, Gray has not been afraid to argue that violence may perhaps be needed to “protect” the white race:

You really need to, if you don’t already, have a concealed weapon, you need to get one. You need to get the license, you need to get the gun, and our people need to quit becoming the victims and we need to protect our families even if that means having to defend them and having to kill somebody else for self-defense. If that’s what is going to take, then so be it, cause we’re becoming the victims when we’re unarmed.
