Synopsis of Aug. 29, 2007 meeting with Representative Vernon Ehlers

by Patricia Wilson

Nine members of Rep. Vern Ehlers’ 3rd congressional district met with him in his Grand Rapids office yesterday in an effort to put pressure on him to change his stance on the U.S. occupation of Iraq.

Over 1000 signed letters of conscience and petitions were presented to Mr.Ehlers and told that these 1000 documents represent additional tens of thousands of people from the area who are also against the occupation of Iraq.

Nancy Davis began the discussion by stating that the American people are against the war in Iraq and they want him to help get us out. She commended Mr. Ehlers for his service to the community saying that he is a smart man and is well regarded for his work on scientific and environmental issues. She also stated that she believed him to be a man of good moral conscience. However she stated that she sees a disconnect with his stance on environmental and pro-life issues and the continuation of the killing and maiming that is taking place daily in Iraq.

Elaine Rios talked about her brother who is in Iraq at this time, hired by one of the contracting firms who are fighting and providing many of the services to the military that they used to provide for themselves. She told Mr. Ehlers that she holds him personally responsible for the killing going on because he could choose to end it and he has not. She appealed to his sense of morals to correct a mistake that he made when he voted to invade and occupy Iraq.

Mr. Ehlers admitted that we are in Iraq because of a mistake. And that he regrets the mistake that led the U.S. to invade. And while he blames faulty intelligence for his mistake, others in the room blame a Bush administration who misconstrued intelligence and deliberately lied in an effort to fool the public into supporting the invasion and occupation of Iraq. Mr. Ehlers stated that he would have voted no on the invasion for chemical weapons of mass destruction, that he may have voted to invade for biological weapons of mass destruction and that he did vote in favor to invade for the claimed nuclear weapons that Colin Powel testified that Sadam Hussein had. One member of the group stated that some in congress did not make that mistake; that they were able to discern the false statements coming from the administration and that it is indeed Mr. Ehlers’ fault along with many others in congress that we are in this mess.

Members of the group meeting with Mr. Ehlers expressed that none of them in the room and very few in the nation by now believe a word that the President of the United States says and many of them turn off the radio and television whenever the president speaks. For this group the President has lost all credibility and told Mr. Ehlers so. One of the group asked Mr. Ehlers why he continues to listen to and believe what the administration puts out when there is so much proof that they are habitual liars.

Glen Freeman talked about his belief in God and asked Mr. Ehlers if he believes that he himself should try to fix his mistake or will he leave it for God to fix? A short while later he threw up his hands and left the room in frustration.

Steve Kaufman told Mr. Ehlers that he wished that he would just vote his conscience and stop voting in lock-step with the Republican Party. He then showed him a copy of a portion of an article about how the White House is lobbying republican legislators in an effort to control the upcoming vote for funding in September.

Christine Fong asked Mr. Ehlers how staying in Iraq and continuing the killing could ever be justified. “So we stay another 2 years or 5 years and more and more people die, what have we accomplished”?

Others at the table talked about the inhumanity of what the United States is doing to the children, women and men (all civilians) in Iraq with hundreds of thousands of people dead and the huge sums of money being spent on this war were discussed as well. Those at the table expressed the believe that communities and individuals here at home are going without because so much of our tax money is going to the military. Surprisingly Mr. Ehlers disagreed and said that the sums of federal money distributed to Michigan are hardly down at all from years past.

Patricia Wilson spoke about the similarities of this occupation with Viet Nam. She stated that this a civil war and is unwinable and that even though there has been some reported improvement in security issues in Iraq since the so-called surge, that as soon as our troops leave those improvements in security will disappear as well. We cannot provide security forever she said. She also stated that it was her belief that Americans are not in favor of endless war. She quoted that 7 out of 10 Americans want to bring the troops home and that it was her hope that Mr. Ehlers would stop voting along Republican Party lines. She stated that some thoughtful republicans have voted with democrats on various bills to end the war and that she hoped that he would soon join them.

Members of the group expressed the desire to have the United Nations actively involved in future negotiations with other nations who have offered to be involved as the United States withdraws troops from Iraq. Printed materials were left with Mr. Ehlers, at his request regarding this. Other materials left concerned a recent article written by several U.S. soldiers.

Members of the group of nine told of a professor who spoke in Grand Rapids the previous night about several permanent military bases that have been built in Iraq. These were described as small fortified cities within the country of Iraq complete with their own swimming pools, restaurants and movie theaters, built with the intention of being occupied for decades to come. Mr. Ehlers offered no comment on this.

Finally the group appealed to Mr. Ehlers’ pride and asked him if he wanted to be remembered for his mistake in Iraq or for admitting his mistake and changing his stance on the war and trying to do the right thing now? “People are forgiving; you would be showered with praise and admiration if you simply admitted that this is all a huge mistake and then started working at making it right” said one member of the group.

National TV Campaign in Favor of the US Occupation comes to Grand Rapids

freedom's watch logo

A national group, Freedom’s Watch, began running ads in 40-60 TV markets across the country in late August, ads that call for a “US Victory in Iraq.” Freedom’s Watch is viewed by some as a White House front group that is made up “of prominent conservatives with a pro-Israel agenda masquerading as a grassroots movement.” The group, which was formed just weeks ago, is led by former White House spokesperson Ari Fleisher. Fleisher was an integral part of the White House’s Iraq War propaganda campaign to convince the US public that former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein possessed weapons of mass destruction. Fleisher resigned in May of 2003, just weeks after the so-called “Mission Accomplished” speech that Bush delivered.

The ad campaign is designed to influence public opinion and legislators to support President Bush’s request for additional funding after the report from General Patraeus is delivered in mid-September. The political file at WOOD TV 8 revealed that the Freedom Watch ads began running in West Michigan in late August and will run through the first two weeks of September, a total of 74 paid spots for a total of $36,625.00. The ads are running during the airing of “The Today Show” and the 5:30 and 6:00pm newscasts. According to the channel 8 public file, the company buying the ad time is Jamestown Associates who describes itself as a “full-service Republican political consulting firm specializing in direct mail, television and radio production, and general strategic consulting.” The Center for Media & Democracy says that Jamestown Associates has represented “such groups as Americans for Job Security, U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and the Republican Jewish Coalition, as well as former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.”

The television ads feature Iraq War Veterans and family members of US soldiers who have died in Iraq. The ads emphasize that the only acceptable solution is a “US Victory in Iraq,” arguing that “now is not the time to cut and run” and that a “US troop withdrawal would tell the terrorists that they can do what they want.” Several of the video ads reference the 9/11 attacks in the US in 2001, one with a still image of the second plane crashing into the twin towers in New York. The ads are consistent with recent White House statements such as an August 28 speech to the American Legion by President Bush where he said:

“For all those who ask whether the fight in Iraq is worth it, imagine an Iraq where militia groups backed by Iran control large parts of the country. Imagine an Iraq where al Qaeda has established sanctuaries to safely plot future attacks on targets all over the world, including America. We’ve seen what these enemies will do when American forces are actively engaged in Iraq. And we can envision what they would do if we — if they were emboldened by American forces in retreat.”

In a recent e-mail by the group Americans Against Escalation in Iraq they state that the Freedom’s Watch ads are running in the West Michigan market because of the pressure that their campaign has put on Grand Rapids area Representative Vern Ehlers. In the email Americans Against Escalation in Iraq wrote:

“Rep. Ehlers has been feeling the heat from his constituents and the Iraq Summer campaign for his support for Bush’s failed war policy. Now these ads are squeezing Rep. Ehlers from the right. With these new ads, Rep. Ehlers is under fire from both sides.”

It is difficult to determine if these ads are directed at Ehlers, his constituents or both. We do know that the group is spending $15 million over the next few weeks in order to impact the next vote on whether or not to give the Bush Administration the additional funding it is asking for with the US occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan.

Nestle Cancels Plans for Pumping Site in West Michigan

Nestle Waters of North America announced on Monday that it is canceling plans to pump spring water from a location in Blue Lake Township. A Nestle spokesperson said that the company has “no interest in moving further” with plans at the Owasippe Scout Reservation. The possibility had been opposed by township officials and is currently in the process that would guard against large-scale water withdrawal by enacting a resolution that would limit the amount of water that can be withdrawn. According to one city official, they are moving forward with the resolution in case Nestle is interested in other sites in the township.

Over the past year, Nestle has attempted to expand in Osceola County while possible pumping sites have been discussed around the state. Nestle’s water bottling operations have been opposed in Michigan since the company began pumping water in 2002. Groups such as Michigan Citizens for Water Conservation, Earth First!, and the Sweetwater Alliance. Ongoing court litigation continues in response to how much water Nestle can pump at its Ice Mountain bottling facility in Mecosta County.

Poverty Widespread in Michigan according to New Census Numbers

New numbers from the United States Census Bureau show that poverty is widespread in Michigan. Since 1999, the overall percentage of people living in poverty in Michigan has increased by 3%. At the same time, poverty levels have increased in cities in Michigan, with Flint’s at 34.1%, Kalamazoo’s at 33.4%, Lansing’s at 27.9%, and Grand Rapids’ at 23%. Kalamazoo and Flint are among the ten cities with the highest poverty rates in the nation, while Detroit has the most people living under the poverty level–32.5%–of any major city in the United States.

Poverty in Michigan is coupled with a high unemployment rate in the state. Michigan’s unemployment rate currently the highest in the United States at 7.2%. Additionally, 10.6% of Michigan’s population is without health insurance.

City Commission Decides against Considering Iraq Resolution

According to yesterday’s Grand Rapids Press, the Grand Rapids City Commission on Tuesday “retreated” from its earlier plan to consider a resolution against the Iraq War. Last week it was reported that the City Commission was drafting a resolution against the Iraq War focusing specifically on the $237 million that the war has cost the city of Grand Rapids. However, Mayor George Heartwell on Tuesday said that he was not sure how the community felt about the war. Instead, Heartwell said that the City Commission should use the interest in the City Commission resolution as “an opportunity for dialogue.” Heartwell said that he would like to see the City Commission in the role of “playing host” to a forum that would perhaps be organized by in town groups such as the World Affairs Council, the National Issues Forum, or the Institute for Global Education.

Neither Commissioners Rick Tormala or James White were impressed by the idea of holding a public hearing on the issue and instead supported a vote on the resolution. A copy of the draft resolution prepared by Commissioners was not available online.

Iraq Summer Holds “Take a Stand” Event

The Iraq Summer campaign held its final event last night, a “Take a Stand” town hall meeting that brought together well over 100 opponents of the ongoing war in Iraq. The event–held at Grand Valley State University’s Loosemore Auditorium on GVSU’s downtown Grand Rapids campus–featured music, speakers, and video aimed at pressuring Representative Vern Ehlers to vote to end the Iraq War. As was expected, Representative Ehlers did not attend despite being invited to listen to his constituents’ concerns on Iraq.

The town hall meeting featured a number of different speakers including area residents, professors from GVSU, an antiwar veteran, and a member of the local religious community. The speakers began with Nancy Davis who spoke about the need to end the war and work for peace. Reverend Doug Van Dorn gave a powerful speech denouncing the war as immoral and arguing that those who consider themselves Christians–especially Representative Ehlers–should not support the ongoing occupation of Iraq and never should have supported the invasion. Sociology professor Hermann Kurthen reminded the audience that the Iraq War is part of a larger imperial project intended to maintain the United States’ global hegemony and argued that we must work against this imperial project regardless of whether or not Democrats or Republicans are in power. He further stated that the upcoming debate over “troop reductions” in Congress is a smokescreen designed to conceal the United States’ long-term desire to establish a permanent presence in the region.

The event ended with one of the Iraq Summer organizers giving a brief overview of the campaign. He explained that the group held multiple demonstrations outside of Ehlers’ office in Grand Rapids, distributed 2,000 yard signs reading “Support the Troops, End the War,” raised $4,000 to run newspaper advertisements calling on Ehlers to support a “responsible” end to the war, and questioned Ehlers directly at a recent event in Grand Rapids. The organizer also announced that Ehlers had finally agreed to meet with some constituents about the war on August 29.

The Iraq Summer organizer urged people to continue pressuring Ehlers as he is the only person in the area that can stop the war. There was no path of action offered by the Iraq Summer campaign to do this, but the antiwar group ACTIVATE/SDS was distributing flyers calling on people to attend a rally in Grand Rapids on September 15 at 12:00pm at Rosa Parks Circle to demonstrate that West Michigan supports an immediate end to the occupation of Iraq.

Throughout the campaign, there was little coverage of Iraq Summer’s efforts in the corporate media. However, Media Mouse regularly covered the group’s events:

9/11 Father that Testified at Immigration Hearing had Ties to the Far Right

photo of peter gadiel

Yesterday’s hearing on immigration in Grandville, organized by West Michigan House of Representatives member Dave Agema featured a considerable amount of testimony that attempted to equate undocumented immigration with terrorists. This is not a new technique for Agema, as he has previously equated immigrants with Hamas and al-Qaeda. This has been coupled with other xenophobic rhetoric coming from Agema and the rest of the his Republican colleagues from the Michigan House of Representatives’ Michigan Task Force on Border Security & Immigration Reform, including comments asserting that immigrants are taking jobs from Michigan residents.

This rhetoric has been used by Agema to push for a bill in the Michigan House of Representatives that would require people to prove their citizenship or immigration status before receiving a driver’s license. In order to advance his argument that undocumented immigrants are associated with terrorists, Agema brought Connecticut resident Peter Gadiel of 9/11 Families for a Secure America. According to Gadiel, 9/11 Families for a Secure America is a membership organization of people “who lost loved ones in those attacks, survivors of those attacks, as well as people who have been victims of violent crimes committed by illegal aliens and their survivors.”

Gadiel’s comments were both some of the harshest and most polished of those made by the individuals invited to speak at the hearing. Gadiel began by talking about how the United States’ government has failed to “stem the tide of illegal aliens” and to prevent Americans from suffering “needlessly at the hands of people who have no business being in the United States.” As part of his testimony, Gadiel urged Michigan to pass Agema’s bill to prevent issuing of driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants and “the violent felons and terrorists among them.” He asserted that “every illegal alien is a person who’s true identity has never been verified and therefore any illegal alien may be a terrorist or violent felon” and repeatedly explained that the “9/11 terrorists” were “illegal aliens.” Gadiel had no qualms about associating undocumented immigrants with the 9/11 attacks; even going so far to state, “I will say with a great degree of confidence that had they not had driver’s licenses, my son and 3,000 other people would be alive today.”

He asked the Task Force if “the people of Michigan really want to be guilty of aiding and abetting the next terrorist attack?” He argued that “Americans can be confident that the next 9/11 terrorists will be illegal aliens” and claimed that the “people of Michigan have moral obligation” to strengthen the state’s laws regarding driver’s licenses. He further claimed that:

“Michigan’s legislators and governor Granholm have a clear choice–you either fight terrorism by denying licenses to illegal aliens or you help terrorists by granting licenses to illegal aliens and the unknown terrorists and violent felons among them. You can do one or the other, you can’t do both.”

Gadiel also explained that one of his 9/11 Families for a Secure America’s board members had a daughter that was stalked and murdered by an “illegal alien” who had three previous arrests while others across the United States have lost their lives to “illegal aliens” who were “driving drunk.” As with his other assertions, there was no evidence provided to support his claims.

Near the end of his testimony, Gadiel told the Task Force “I have been called a Nazi, a KKK, other horrific names.” He asserted that he was of Jewish heritage, but did not explain why he had been called such names and why he chose to share the story. Had Gadiel disclosed some of his own connections and the connections of his organization with the organized anti-immigrant movement, those it the audience would have understood why he was concerned about being termed a racist.

Gadiel is a former board member of the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) an organization that was formed in the 1980s to oppose immigration. Since its founding, FAIR has been accused of maintaining links to white supremacist groups and holding racist views. Many of these accusations center around the fact that from 1985 to 1994 FAIR accepted money from the Pioneer Fund, an organization that funded research on eugenics and the so-called superiority of the white race. FAIR’s founder John Tanton, who now lives in Michigan, somewhat notoriously used racist terminology to describe Latinos in a series of memos outlining his strategy for the anti-immigrant movement. In addition, Tanton runs a publishing company called Social Contract Press that publishes and distributes a wide range of anti-immigrant literature.

Currently, FAIR and 9/11 Families for a Secure America share two advisors–David Schippers and Alan Weeden. Weeden is on FAIR’s board of directors while David Schippers is listed as a member of FAIR’s “National Board of Advisors.” Additionally, Richard Lamm–one of 9/11 Families for a Secure America’s advisors–is a former member of FAIR’s board of directors. Lamm, who is a former governor of Colorado, once gave a speech asserting that turning the United States into “a bilingual or multi-lingual and bicultural country” would destroy the country by valuing “multiculturalism.” The fourth member of 9/11 Families for a Secure America’s “Advisors” is Michael Cutler, who is on the board of the Center for Immigration Studies, an organization that was founded as an offshoot of FAIR in the 1980s.

Additionally, 9/11 Families for a Secure America links to a variety of anti-immigrant websites from its own website, including Vdare.com and American Patrol, both of whom have been accused of racism by the Southern Poverty Law Center. Moreover, Gadiel’s writings have appeared on Vdare.com, with Gadiel writing about the “invasion of law-breaking illegals” in Connecticut who “evade taxes.” Gadiel founded but is no longer with Connecticut Citizens for Immigration Control and also spoke recently at a rally attended by white supremacists.

9/11 Families for a Secure America website lists “endorsements” from to individuals associated with the far right spectrum of the immigration debate in Congress–Wisconsin Representative James Sensenbrenner who in 2005 pushed a punitive immigration “reform” package through the House and Colorado Representative Tom Tancredo. The group describes its purpose:

“To focus their [the public's] attention on the dangers of unsecured borders, visa waiver programs, loose standards for issuing drivers’ licenses, acceptance of matricular cards. We will make sure the public understands that illegal immigration and terrorism are inseparable issues.”

To this end, 9/11 Families for a Secure America has used the emotion associated with the 9/11 attacks to call for stricter border controls. The group asserts that “the failure to keep out unauthorized aliens led directly to the 9/11 attacks and the deaths of our loved ones” and prioritizes its work in the areas of “border security” and “driver’s license reform.” This has included endorsing legislation such as Agema’s that would prevent undocumented immigrants from obtaining driver’s licenses as well as supporting measures such as assigning troops to the United States-Mexico border. The group takes a number of other stands including calling for the enactment of “English-only” laws, ending the practice of awarding citizenship to the children of undocumented immigrants when they are born in the United States, and ending affirmative action programs for immigrants. Many of these positions go far beyond addressing “secure concerns” and instead reflect a larger anti-immigrant bias.

Despite these positions, 9/11 Families for a Secure America has been able to position itself within the mainstream of the immigration debate. Just as they did at the hearing yesterday in West Michigan, the group has delivered testimony before Congress and has appeared in the media without disclosure of their connections to the far right. This in many ways reflects the successes of the organized anti-immigrant movement. That movement–despite ties to the racist right–has been able to have considerable influence on the political debates over immigration in the past twenty years, despite its ties to the racist right.

Republican Task Force Holds Hearing on “Illegal Immigration” in West Michigan

Today, the Michigan Task Force on Border Security & Immigration Reform–a body consisting of five members of Michigan’s House of Representatives–held a hearing “on how illegal immigration” affects Michigan. The hearing was held in Jenison because one of the committee’s members–Dave Agema–is a Republican representative from the West Michigan city of Grandville. The three other members of the Task Force–all of whom are Republicans–Phil Pavlov of St. Clair Township, Chuck Moss of Birmingham, and Dave Robertson of Grand Blanc–either have held or will hold hearings on the topic in their district.

Today’s hearing featured nine speakers representing a variety of entities including Customs and Border Protection, the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, the Michigan State Police, the Ottawa County Clerk’s Office, the Ottawa County Farm Bureau, Mercantile Bank, and Congressman Peter Hoekstra. The speakers, while all presenting a slightly different perspective, represented an “enforcement only” approach to immigration that sought to find ways to verify people’s documentation status and to enforce or create new regulations on immigration. There was no perspective included among the nine people testifying that took a more comprehensive view of the issue of immigration, nor was there any debate amongst those testifying as they essentially backed the perspective of the Task Force. According to an aide for Representative Agema, those testifying were representatives of agencies whom the Task Force contacted to testify. The majority of the panelists specifically spoke in favor Representative Agema’s driver’s license bill that would require Michigan residents to prove citizenship or legal immigration status before being issued a license. After the nine scheduled panelists spoke, there were ten minutes for public comment. The hearing went over that time limit by about half-an-hour, but it was clear that the panel was not terribly interested in hearing the public’s opinion on the matter when it disagreed with their own assumptions.

All of those who waited to comment during the public comment period were opponents of Agema’s driver’s license law as well as the overall association of immigrants with terrorists. Members of the West Michigan Catholic community spoke in opposition to the criminalization of immigrants, urging the members of the Task Force to consult the website Justiceforimmigrants.org and the Michigan Catholic Conference’s position on immigration. Others told the Task Force that undocumented immigrants come to the United States seeking a better opportunity because they have no other recourse as the legal processes are inaccessible for those with the most need while urging the Task Force to investigate why people migrate to the United States. The Task Force heard from people who rejected the notion of equating of immigrants with terrorists, pointing out that the association creates a “lynch mob mentality” against undocumented immigrants. It was also asserted that the best place to deal with immigration is at the federal level, with one citizen reminding the panel that Agema opposed comprehensive immigration reform despite the fact that two heads of the Department of Homeland Security–Tom Ridge and Michael Chertoff–have both said that it must be considered as pure law enforcement efforts are not enough.

While much of the scheduled testimony overlapped and included similar rhetoric about how to identify undocumented immigrants, the possibility that criminals are slipping through the cracks in the broken immigration system, and whether or not Michigan and local law enforcement officials could be empowered to enforce immigration law, there were two speakers that were particularly noteworthy. The first was Peter Gadiel, a man who said he was from Connecticut and who was representing the organization 9/11 Families for a Secure America. According to one of Agema’s staffers, a representative of 9/11 Families for a Secure America was specifically sought out because of “the role they have played in the debate” at the national level. Peter Gadiel, who represented the organization, said “people are dying at the hands of people here illegally” and went on a lengthy diatribe against illegal immigrants that repeatedly associated them with the 9/11 terrorists. He said that “drunk-driving illegal aliens” are killing people and that his son–who was killed in the 9/11 attacks–would be alive if the 9/11 terrorists would not have had driver’s licenses. He therefore endorsed Agema’s legislation while also calling for the law enforcement officials to enforce immigration law. At the national level, Gadiel’s organization has sought to address “the dangers of unsecured borders, visa waiver programs, loose standards for issuing drivers’ licenses, [and the] acceptance of matricular cards.” Gadiel’s comments were the harshest of the hearing, and it is therefore not surprising that his organization links to several far right entities on its website including the Federation for American Immigration Reform (Gadiel was also a FAIR board member) and other organizations associated with Michigan resident and major financier of the anti-immigrant movement John Tanton, as well as organizations such as Vdare.com and American Patrol–both of whom have been accused of racism by the Southern Poverty Law Center. Gadiel also recently spoke at an event in Morristown, NJ that was attended by neo-Nazis.

It is also worth noting that Representative Agema is listed as a member of 9/11 Families for a Secure America’s State Legislators for Legal Immigration project, along with Kalamazoo area representative Jack Hoogendyk. The State Legislators for Legal Immigration organization is circulating a petition calling for the “securing of our borders against unlawful invasion” and the denial of education, health, and welfare benefits for undocumented immigrations. In addition, the organization associates “illegal aliens” with “incidences of homicide, identity theft, property theft, serious infectious diseases, drug running, gang violence, human trafficking, terrorism and growing cost to taxpayers.” In response to this alleged threat–which functions as a threat against immigrants–the group is calling for state governments to deny public services to immigrants with the goal of ending the “illegal immigrant invasion” and thereby enacting a process that will result in “the illegal aliens returning to their home country of origin on their own volition.”

The other person that testified who was of interest was someone who was listed on the agenda only as “Mary Anne Van Dam.” Van Dam told a story about how her parents were “legal” immigrants from Mexico, that they worked in the blueberry fields, and that they ultimately became residents of the United States. This was a difficult process according to Van Dam, with constant effort required to keep their green cards current and difficulty in making sure that their children learned English. Van Dam ended her comments by stating that she supported Agema’s bill calling for a driver’s licenses to only be issued to citizens. However, Van Dam–and the rest of the Task Force–failed to acknowledge that far from being an unbiased source, she is Representative Agema’s “Campaign Manager.” Numerous news releases on Agema’s website list her as a contact and she is listed as Agema’s district contact person on the city of Grandville’s website. It seems unethical at best not to disclose this connection and at worst deliberately dishonest.

That the body would present a slate of speakers that advanced a fear of immigrants is not surprising given their past statements. Representative Agema has made “illegal immigration” a major issue and has sponsored a variety of legislation designed to make Michigan “a more difficult place for illegals to survive.” In a recent news release announcing his proposed driver’s license legislation, Agema said:

“The cost of not taking these safety precautions is great due to outside threats that can result in the potential loss of life. This move also can help the state with significant long-term savings by stopping the infiltration of illegal aliens, who add to Michigan’s education, welfare, health care, and prison costs and allow legal Michigan residents to keep jobs that otherwise would be hired out to illegals.”

Representative Dave Robertson, who denied a citizen’s charge that the Task Force had promoted “divisive” rhetoric–despite Robertson’s statement that “multiculturalism political correctness” is “anything but correct”–recently stated that “illegal immigration puts strain on Michigan’s public services and costs Michigan taxpayers millions in funding for these service (http://www.gophouse.com/readarticle.asp?id=4401&District=51).” No source was provided for his assertion.

BP Withdraws Plan to Increase Lake Michigan Pollution

British Petroleum (BP) has withdrawn its plan to increase the amount of pollution that it dumps in Lake Michigan according to the corporate media< and Environment Michigan. The Detroit News reported that BP is denying that they changed their plans due to public pressure, instead stating that they were concerned about “regulatory uncertainty.” However, environmentalists were quick to claim victory citing massive public opposition to BP’s efforts to increase the amount of pollution it dumps in Lake Michigan. Environment Michigan Director Mike Shriberg wrote in an email to supporters:

“Yesterday marked a great victory, one that demonstrates the power of everyday people to stand up and fight to protect their environment. Citing “ongoing regional opposition,” BP America Chairman and President Bob Malone announced yesterday morning that the company will avoid any increased pollution into Lake Michigan from its oil refinery in Whiting, Indiana. BP has heard the voices of millions of Great Lakes Region residents that Lake Michigan is our natural treasure and source of drinking water, not our dumping ground. BP’s statement indicates it will avoid increased dumping of ammonia and toxics-containing solids, which are allowed by its new discharge permit issued in June by Indiana’s Department of Environmental Management. We’ll be sure to keep up the pressure to make sure that BP lives up to yesterday’s promise — and we’ll let you know if they falter. Yesterday’s statement from BP couldn’t have happened without the actions of people like you, and I want to express my deepest thanks for the ongoing support everyone has shown throughout this campaign. Together, we made yesterday’s announcement happen and protected our lake.”

In recent weeks Environment Michigan had delivered 65,000 signatures opposing the plan to BP and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), while the Alliance for the Great Lakes filed a legal petition to halt the pollution permit. The plan had also received widespread criticism from politicians in the region.
