On Thursday, Representative Vern Ehlers honored his pledge to support an attempt to override President Bush’s veto of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). Ehlers voted to support the program in a failed attempt to override Bush’s veto. The override failed by a vote of 273 to 156, 13 votes short of the two-thirds majority needed. West Michigan Representative Pete Hoekstra of Holland voted against the SCHIP program despite the fact his office was targeted by protestors earlier this week and polls indicating that as many as 80% of residents of the United States support the SCHIP legislation.
