Witch-Hunting the Environmental Movement: The Politics of Green Scare

Mediamouse.org is reprinting this article by Stephen Lendman because it offers important background information and analysis on the targeting of environmental activists in the United States. This is of particular importance with the recent indictments of four individuals for an Earth Liberation Front (ELF) arson at Michigan State University.

In May 2005, FBI Deputy Assistant Director for Counterterrorism John Lewis told a Senate panel that ecoterrorism is “one of today’s most serious domestic terrorism threats.” Then the FBI’s James Jarboe estimated that two organizations (the Earth Liberation Front – ELF and Animal Liberation Front – ALF) committed over 600 criminal acts since 1996, causing over $43 million in damage. For his part, Lewis said both groups committed more than 1100 such acts since 1976, “conservatively” resulting in around $110 million in damages.

What’s going on, and is there anything to these charges? Coming from FBI sources makes them highly suspect, especially when there are two types of documented cases:

– people guilty of non-violent offenses called “terrorism” and given excessively harsh sentences; and most disturbing

– innocent people targeted, accused, convicted and sentenced to hard time for environmental activism or supporting animal rights; and that’s on top of hundreds of other political persecutions and many thousands of innocent people (or petty criminals) in US prisons.

This behavior isn’t new in America, but things heated up after 9/11 with the administration wasting no time getting going. That evening, George Bush addressed the nation and declared a “war against terrorism,” asked for world support, and began the government’s “emergency (preventive war strategy) response plans.” It was planned and ready before 9/11 as a “war of terrorism” to defile the law, wage aggressive wars, usurp unprecedented powers, destroy our civil liberties, and convince the public to sacrifice freedom for the security they never got. In addition, the October 2001 USA Patriot Act (written well before 9/11) created the federal crime of “domestic terrorism” that broadened the definition and applied it to US citizens as well as aliens.

When John Lewis addressed another Senate panel in May 2004, he stated that “the FBI divides the terrorist threat facing (the country) into two broad categories, international and domestic….and during the past decade we have witnessed dramatic changes in the nature of the domestic terrorist threat.” For a while “right-wing extremism” (loosely defined as the militia movement) overtook left-wing terrorism (but in) the past several years….special interest extremism (from groups like) the Animal Liberation Front (ALF), the Earth Liberation Front (ELF), and related extremists, has emerged as a serious domestic terrorist threat.” That view is amplified on the FBI’s web site that states the Bureau “is part of a vast national and international campaign dedicated to defeating terrorism” with ecoterrorism a key part of it.

The FBI defined it in 2002 to mean: “the use or threatened use of violence of a criminal nature against innocent victims or property by an environmentally-oriented, subnational group for environmental-political reasons, or aimed at an audience beyond the target, often of a symbolic nature.”

Activists refer to a tactic called “monkeywrenching” from the 1985 Dave Foreman/Bill Haywood-edited book “Ecodefense: A Field Guide to Monkeywrenching.” It describes it as:

– “nonviolent resistance to the destruction of natural diversity and wilderness (and) never directed against human beings or other forms of life;

– strategic….thoughtful (and) deliberate in order to succeed;

– individual or very small (group actions) of people who have known each other for years (and have) trust and a good working relationship;

– targeted (because) mindless, erratic vandalism is counterproductive as well as unethical;

– timely (and) not….when there is a nonviolent civil disobedience action;

– dispersed (to) hasten overall industrial retreat from wild areas;

– fun (even though it’s) serious and potentially dangerous;

– not revolutionary….to overthrow any social, political, or economic system;

– simple (with) elaborate commando operations generally avoided; and

– deliberate and ethical (by being) the most moral of all actions: protecting life, defending Earth.”

The Earth First Journal defines the practice as: “Ecotage (environmentally-motivated sabotage), ecodefense, billboard bandit(ry by sawing offensive ones down), road reclamation (to remediate environmental damage), tree spiking (with nails to discourage destructive logging), even fire.” These are unlawful sabotage acts “of industrial extraction and development equipment, as a means of striking at the Earth’s destroyers where they commit their crimes and hitting them where they feel it most – in their profit margins.” It goes “beyond civil disobedience. It is nonviolent, aimed only at inanimate objects. It is one of the last steps in defense of the wild….by an Earth defender when almost all other measures have failed.”

In May 2004, Republican George Nethercutt targeted them by introducing the Ecoterrorism Prevention Act of 2004, but it didn’t pass. If it had, it would have made a federal crime: “certain violent, threatening, obstructive, and destructive conduct that is intended to injure, intimidate, or interfere with plant and animal enterprises, and for other purposes.”

Republicans tried again in July with the Terrorism Against Animal-Use Entities Prohibition Improvement Act that would have amended the 1992 Animal Enterprise Protection Act and made it harsher. It also failed to pass, but defeat was only temporary.

On November 27, 2006, the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act (AETA) amended the 1992 act and became law with very harsh provisions. It’s language is broad and vague, but it criminalizes First Amendment activities that advocate for animal rights like peaceful protests, leafleting, undercover investigations, whistleblowing and boycotts.

The new law updates the earlier act with penalties far exceeding comparable offenses under other laws. It also goes much further. It allows expanded surveillance of animal rights organizations, including criminal wiretapping, and makes it easier for a court to find probable cause for the vague crime of economic damage or disruption than for one requiring hard evidence a person or group plans to commit these acts.

The bill exempts “lawful public, governmental or business reaction to the disclosure of information about an animal enterprise,” but that only applies to economic disruption claims, not damage, and makes it hard to distinguish between the two. It also:

– expands the kinds of facilities covered by adding ones that use or sell animals and animal products;

– covers any person, entity or organization connected to an animal enterprise;

– applies to any form of advocacy;

– criminalizes threatening conduct and protected speech as well as communication with anyone engaging in these practices;

– protects corporate animal abusers with a vested interest in silencing dissent; and

– targets any form of civil disobedience or protest activity and designates animal advocates as terrorists even when they cause no physical harm; in addition, the bill’s language is so broad and vague (by design), it’s hard to know the difference between legal and illegal behavior; it’s an act of green scare state terrorism that, in fact, can be used against anyone.

Green Scare – A Definition

Activists equate it to earlier Red Scare periods after WW I and II when the government used various schemes to incite fear, sanction witch hunt prosecutions, and win widespread public approval for them. The term may first have been used in 2002 and refers to legal and extralegal government actions against animal liberation and environmental activists. The Spirit of Freedom prisoner support network defines it as “tactics the government and (their enforcement agencies use) to attack the ELF/ALF (Earth Liberation Front and Animal Liberation Front) and specifically those who publicly support them.”

The term also refers to the 2005 arrests, indictments and convictions from the FBI’s Operation Backfire against alleged ELF/ALF activists. It charged them with damaging property, conspiracy, arson and using destructive devices.

The Operation was the FBI’s code name for its ten year domestic “war on terrorism” that’s, in fact, a war on dissent. It resulted in 17 Pacific Northwest arson indictments with evidence that was very suspect. It came from a heroin-addicted self-professed serial arsonist whose former girl friend mentioned him in a grand jury proceeding. On December 7, 2005, it culminated when federal and local law enforcement agents began the largest ever roundup of alleged environmental and animal liberation activists. Seven arrests were made in four states, others got grand jury subpoenas, and people seized were charged with various acts of destroying property as part of ELF and ALF efforts.

Those arrested faced potential unprecendented sentences for non-violent acts from which no one was harmed. In some cases, they could be mandatory 30 year periods and in others life if found guilty on all counts. That compares to a median sentence of five years for arson.

With that as a threat, all but four defendants testified against the others in return for leniency. The remaining four struck plea bargains to admit responsibility but incriminate no one else. At sentencing in June 2007, the presiding judge was harsh. He included Terrorism Enhancements (TE) that are used when the justice department decides a crime aimed to influence or coerce government policy. It means sentences may be longer, and the Bureau of Prisons gets greater latitude in assigning prisoners that may be to “supermax” facilities for the most violent offenders.

In this case, sentences ranged from three years, one month to 13 years with most defendants getting added TEs. In addition, on October 26, 2007, FBI informant and serial arsonist Jacob Ferguson pleaded guilty to one count of arson and an additional count of attempted arson. According to his plea bargain, he won’t be charged for his other offenses. Further, he’s required to make no restitution, his formal sentencing keeps being postponed, it may come up ahead, but prosecutors recommend he spend no time in prison, receive no fines, and be able to keep the $50,000 or more he was paid for cooperating.

That’s the state of things today where anything goes in the “war on terrorism” and publicizing arrests and convictions takes precedence over justice. Unless stopped, things will only get worse.

ELF and ALF – A Brief Description

On its web site, ELF describes itself as “an underground movement with no leadership, membership or official spokesperson” and uses its site “to inform and chronicle issues related to ELF.” It further states:

– “Any individuals who committed arson or any other illegal acts under the ELF name….choose to do so….and do so only driven by their personal conscience;

– These choices are not endorsed, encouraged, or approved of by this web site’s management, webmasters, affiliates, or other participants;

– The intention of this web site is journalistic in intent only to inform and chronicle issues related to ELF;

– The owners, management, webmasters, affiliates, or other participants of this website are not spokespersons, members, or affiliates of The Earth Liberation Front in any way; nor do the opinions of anyone acting in the name of The Earth Liberation Front or ELF, represent the opinions of” those affiliated with this site.

Others refer to the ELF as a collective of autonomous individuals or cells that use “economic sabotage and guerrilla war to stop the exploitation and destruction of the natural environment.” The organization was founded in Brighton, England in 1992, spread across Europe by 1994, and is now an international movement in over a dozen countries. The FBI designated ELF its top domestic terror threat in March 2001 and called the group “ecoterrorists.”

The ALF is an international animal liberation organization with roots in the 19th century and with no formal membership or leadership. Its web site defines “animal rights” as “the philosophy of allowing nonhuman animals to have the basic rights that all sentient beings desire; freedom to live a natural life, free from human exploitation, unnecessary pain and suffering, and premature death.” It believes animals aren’t property any more than humans are and asks if animal rights will become the “next great social justice movement.” It cites President of the Australian Law Reform Commission (ALRC) David Weisbrot saying treating animals is increasingly becoming a social and legal issue as well as an important economic one.

Its members engage in direct action on behalf of animals, including removing them from laboratories and fur farms (they call liberation, not theft) and sabotaging animal testing and industry animal-based facilities. Its statements affirm it supports any acts that further animal liberation where reasonable precautions are taken not to endanger life. Its covert cells operate in dozens of countries clandestinely and independently of each other. In January 2005, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) designated ALF a domestic terrorist threat.

Examples of Witch Hunt Convictions

Many can be cited, but Jeff Luers’ case is typical. In June 2001, he was sentenced to 22 years, eight months for burning three SUVs to raise awareness of global warming and how these gas-guzzlers contribute to it. No one was hurt, $40,000 in damages resulted, and the vehicles were refurbished and subsequently sold. Jeff is a political prisoner, and his sentence exceeds that for murder, kidnapping and rape under Oregon law where he resides. He appealed in January 2002, the hearing was held in November 2005, and on February 14, 2007 the Appeals Court remanded his case to the Circuit Court for resentencing. The case was heard on February 28, 2008 after which his sentence was reduced to 10 years.

Josh Harper is another political prisoner who committed no crime. He’s an activist believer in animal liberation, preserving the wilderness, and participated in human freedom projects for over 10 years. In 1997, he co-created Breaking Free Video magazine and went on speaking tours in 1999. He also sabotaged a whale hunt, defied grand juries, and contributed to confrontational protest campaigns. It made him a target and got him indicted for violating the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act (AETA).

Evidence at his trial was mostly from two of his speeches in 2001 and 2002. He spoke about already committed political sabotage acts as well as European anti-vivisection campaigns he supported. He also ended one speech by demonstrating how to participate in a form of electronic civil disobedience called “black faxing” that involves sending multiple black paper sheets through an opponent’s fax machine. It got him arrested, charged and convicted.

He was one of six animal rights activists in the so-called SHAC 7 (Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty) case. Charges against one of the original 7 were dropped. SHAC is an international animal rights campaign against Huntingdon Life Sciences (HLS) – one of the world’s largest contract research organizations, UK based, and operating on three continents. It’s also Europe’s largest contract animal-testing laboratory and uses around 75,000 animals each year in its operations.

UK-based activists established SHAC in 1999 and successfully closed down two animal-testing operations in their country. It’s now a worldwide campaign, the first of its kind, and it operates in the UK, US, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy as well as many other countries. It calls its campaign “innovative” and states it doesn’t “encourage or incite illegal activity.”

On March 2, 2006, Harper and his co-defendants were charged and convicted of conspiracy to violate AETA (and several other charges) and got sentences of from four to six years. The case was an appalling miscarriage of justice for violating the defendants’ First Amendment rights that AETA repealed for these activists. The defendants weren’t charged with violent or threatening acts. Instead, the case was based on the notion that animal rights organizers are responsible for actions others take that the prosecution equated to a global conspiracy.

Briana Waters is another example of gross injustice. She’s an innocent woman charged and convicted. On March 30, 2006, she was arrested and accused of being a lookout in connection with an alleged 2001 arson at the University of Washington Center for Urban Horticulture. Waters is a California resident, violin teacher and mother of a young child. She was indicted, then reindicted with other defendants on May 10 on charges that included using a destructive device that carries a mandatory 30 year sentence.

On December 26, 2007, her lawyers filed a motion accusing the Justice Department of concealing vital exculpatory information as well as producing a fraudulent FBI report. The agency is infamous for creating “evidence” out of whole cloth and getting manipulated informants to state it. Nonetheless, a hostile federal judge denied defense’s motion and went further as well. He ruled against allowing a defense expert to rebut government “evidence” that a delayed incendiary device was a bomb.

One of Waters’ attorneys expressed outrage over a common federal practice of “The government hand-picking (the) judge (and) manipulating court procedures. This is a classic case of a corrupt prosecution, and a judge who apparently chooses to look the other way.” It’s no surprise at a time two-thirds of all federal judges are from or affiliated with the extremist Federalist Society. It advocates rolling back civil liberties; ending New Deal social policies; opposing reproductive choice, government regulations, labor rights and environmental protections; and subverting justice in defense of privilege.

Waters was up against this when her trial began on February 11, 2008. She was further disadvantaged by the government’s case being based on two informants who struck a plea bargain by pleading guilty to conspiracy, arson and destructive devices in return for leniency. On March 6, Waters was convicted on two arson counts, but the jury deadlocked on the more serious charges of a destructive device and conspiracy. Despite prosecution claims, no devices were found nor was there evidence of conspiracy. That raises serious questions of the government’s falsifying evidence and lying to the jury about it. Again, no surprise under witch hunt justice with innocent people like Briana being harmed.

Her case also featured circumstantial evidence, including a folder containing radical pamphlets with a note on the cover from Waters to one of the informants. She testified that she didn’t write them or subscribe to their views. The prosecution claimed otherwise. Her defense also argued that Waters knew nothing about the materials, they were substituted for ones she put in the folder, and her fingerprints weren’t on the ones in it for proof.

Civil rights attorney Ben Rosenfeld said the “government’s case was primarily based on character assassination and guilt by association (and that) evidence of other people’s writings should never have been allowed to be used against her.” He also denounced former Attorney General Gonzales for proclaiming Waters guilty in the media after she was indicted. He harmed her chances at the outset and showed convictions count more than justice, especially when charges of terrorism are raised. Waters strongly defends her innocence and will likely appeal the verdict. Sentencing is on May 30.

A Look Ahead

Post-9/11, future prospects look grim with fear prevailing over reason, a bipartisan effort exploiting it, and convictions more important than justice. If friends of the earth and animal rights champions are targeted, so can anyone. Governments today won’t protect us and neither do courts that defer to their lawlessness. As a result, expect lots more innocent people hurt because those in power want unlimited amounts of it and won’t let anyone stop them from getting it. It means hard times ahead when the law won’t protect us, dissent is a crime, and the greater good is sacrificed to benefit the privileged.

What to do? Get active, organize, speak out, resist, and use the law for whatever justice is still under it. Things are very dire, change isn’t coming next year, and, more than ever, apathy isn’t an option. In America’s “war on terrorism,” we’re all potential targets.

Dozens of Civilians Feared Dead in US Attack on Sadr City

The US-led offensive against Shia fighters in Iraq has reached what could be its deadliest point to date. On Tuesday, residents of the Baghdad neighborhood of Sadr City said a US assault left at least fifty people dead and 130 injured, many of them women and children. A US airstrike was said to have destroyed at least three homes and buried families beneath the rubble.

Resident: “A catastrophe, a catastrophe. If you have not heard of catastrophe, this is one. An earthquake, an earthquake carried out by a vengeful being.”

The US military disputed local accounts, saying it killed dozens of armed fighters. More than 500 people have been killed since the crackdown on forces loyal to Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr began last month.

UN to Form Task Force on Food Crisis

The United Nations has announced plans to form a top-level task force to address the global food crisis. Aid experts say soaring global prices for food and fuel threaten to push 100 million people worldwide into hunger. The rise has been attributed to several factors, including bad weather, the higher price of oil and the diversion of crops to produce biofuels for cars.

Rev. Jackson Urges Haiti Food Aid

On Tuesday, the civil rights leader Reverend Jesse Jackson visited Haiti, where he called for emergency aid.

Rev. Jesse Jackson: “We want to immediately meet with leaders of our Congress and the Food Market Institute to address the issue of adequate food for Haiti in this coming emergency period. Secondly, in the meantime, Haiti’s farm rice producers need to rebuild their infrastructure, tractors and transportation and seeds. It’s going to take about a year to do that, so in the emergency time, we need rice and wheat and cooking oil now.”

Earlier this month, five Haitians were killed during protests over the rising cost of food.

Bush Rejects Biofuel Link to Food Crisis

Meanwhile, at the White House, President Bush said he is concerned about food prices but dismissed biofuels as a major factor.

President Bush: “In terms of the international situation, we are deeply concerned about food prices here at home, and we’re deeply concerned about people who don’t have food abroad. In other words, scarcity is of concern to us. Last year, we were very generous in our food donations, and this year we’ll be generous, as well.”

Earlier this year, the Bush administration announced it would scale back emergency food aid to some of the world’s poorest countries because of soaring prices.

Latin American, European Leaders Meet on Poverty, Inequality

Latin American and European Leaders are currently meeting in Peru for talks on poverty and social inequality. On Tuesday, Peruvian Congressmember Luis Gonzales Posada called on rich nations to shift spending priorities.

Luis Gonzales Posada: “Thousands of children in Latin American die from hunger, malnutrition and the lack of primary medical care. Because of that, we feel that the millions spent on arms, the rise in gas prices that is destabilizing the economies of poor countries, climate change and terrorism are the new ills of the Apocalypse that is shaking Latin American and threatening our institutions.”

Zimbabwe Opposition Accuses Mugabe Supporters of Crackdown

In Zimbabwe, opposition leaders are accusing supporters of President Robert Mugabe of a new round of violence. Members of the Movement for Democratic Change say gangs linked to Mugabe’s political party have targeted neighborhoods that voted against Mugabe in elections last month. At the United Nations, Tendai Biti of the Movement for Democratic Change called for international intervention.

Tendai Biti: “There is a systematic violence that is being unleashed by the state against the people of Zimbabwe. There is complete militarization of the society, and the country itself is being run by military, a quasi-civilian junta chaired by Mugabe himself.”

Tensions have risen in Zimbabwe in the month since the election, with final results still to be announced.

Chevron Accused of Complicity in Burma Abuses

In Burma, the oil giant Chevron is being accused of supporting human rights abuses in protection of a gas pipeline. EarthRights International says the Burmese military has committed rape and murder while guarding the pipeline that moves gas from the Yadana gas field. Chevron has a 28 percent stake in the Yadana project.

Obama Condemns Former Pastor

On the campaign trail, Senator Barack Obama has sharply denounced his former pastor Reverend Jeremiah Wright. Wright broke his media silence this week since the controversy over his alleged views on issues including US foreign policy and the 9/11 attacks. On Tuesday, Senator Obama condemned what he called Reverend Wright’s “divisive and destructive” comments.

Sen. Barack Obama: “The person I saw yesterday was not the person that I met twenty years ago. His comments were not only divisive and destructive, but I believe that they end up giving comfort to those who prey on hate, and I believe that they do not portray accurately the perspective of the black church. They certainly don’t portray accurately my values and beliefs.”

Obama has previously distanced himself from Rev. Wright’s political beliefs but refused to repudiate his former pastor, whom he likened to a family member.

McCain Health Care Proposal Mirror Bush Admin

On the Republican side, Senator John McCain has unveiled the health care plan he’ll campaign-on this November. At a speech in Tampa, Florida, McCain called for a similar approach to President Bush’s failed health care effort. Tax rebates would go to individuals seeking private insurance outside of company health plans. McCain says he’d promote the use of health savings accounts and grants for hospitals that cut costs. And McCain vowed to create a program to help care for vulnerable Americans but offered no details.

Study: Nearly 1/3 of Americans Struggle to Pay for Medical Care, Insurance

A new study released Tuesday from the Kaiser Family Foundation shows nearly one-third of Americans have faced major difficulties paying for medical care or health insurance in the past year. One-quarter of workers say they made job decisions based primarily on healthcare considerations.

Home Foreclosures Rise in 1st Quarter of 2008

And new figures show home foreclosures continue to rise. According to Realty Trac, more than 155,000 families have lost their homes to foreclosure this year. That’s more than double the number over the same three-month period last year.

Rally at American Axle Shareholders Meeting

On Thursday, April 24, auto workers on strike at American Axle rallied in Detroit outside a shareholders meeting of the company where Richard Dauch, CEO, reiterated company demands for pay cuts amounting to more than half the workers wages and benefits. Detroit police were mobilized in force with two dozen squad cars, a bus to transport prisoners, and a special riot control squad armed with firearms and large canisters of mace:

How to Make Good Consumers of Hispanics?

Sometimes you do things that you know will be painful, but you do them anyway. This was the case for me on April 16 when I went to a luncheon presentation hosted by the Ad Club of West Michigan. The topic for the day was “The Hispanic Market: Solid Creative Requires Solid Research.” It sounded somewhat interesting when I saw the promotional materials for this and I thought that maybe it would be a good opportunity to connect with folks in the Latino community. Wow, was I ever wrong.

The presenter was Craig Harper, Executive Vice President of Simmons Marketing Research based out of Memphis, Tennessee. You guessed it, he was a middle aged white guy, who by his own admission, had not spent much time working in the Hispanic community and spoke absolutely no Spanish. Seems like reason enough to have him speak on how best to target Hispanics when designing an ad campaign.

Craig started the session off by doing a “Reader’s Digest” version on the history of Hispanic migration to the US. He says the first wave came in 1959 right after the Cuban revolution. Funny, I always thought that the use of Mexican labor in the early part of the 20th Century and then again during the Bracero program in 1942 were the first real waves of Hispanic immigration.

Next, the speaker stated that it is important to understand how widespread Hispanic culture has become in the US, even amongst the White population. The indicators he cited are the popularity of Latino music, Latino food, and the fact that many gringos celebrate both Cinco de Mayo and the Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead). While these indicators may be true at some level, their popularity is in part due to the business community’s ability to use these aspects of Hispanic culture to make a buck. Next time you are at the Mexican festival in Grand Rapids, notice the Mexican flags on the Miller Lite beer tent.

On the next page of the Power Point, the presenter finally got to the point of his presentation. The text that filled the screen said, “Hispanic purchasing power will be over $1 Trillion by 2012.” Now we are getting somewhere. This explains why the room at the Ad Club luncheon was filled with primarily gringos representing a variety of advertising firms and the local Chamber of Commerce.

Mr. Harper then went on to say that it is important for those in the ad business to understand that more and more Hispanics, particularly second generation Hispanics, are consuming English language media. The exception to this rule is radio where the majority of Hispanics prefer to listen to Spanish language radio. The increased consumption of English language media has meant greater acculturation. Acculturation, Craig said, has meant a shift from convenience for Hispanic shoppers (small neighborhood stores) to those who are willing to travel to shop (malls and big box stores). He also stated that another reflection of acculturation was that Hispanics are shifting from shopping based on need to shopping based on enjoyment. Yeah! Great will be the day when large numbers of Hispanic consumers trample each other at 5am the day after Thanksgiving in order to get their hands on the latest hyped toy for their kids.

Next, came the really fun part where he showed what he called “successful ad campaigns” that targeted the Hispanic population. The first example was a TV ad from Honda. The ad begins with a kid on skates, to an adolescent on a skateboard to an older teen on a bike to a family getting into a car. The whole time the commercial is running you can hear a musical score in the background, music by the insurgent Mexican group Control Machete. Control Machete, for those who know Mexican bands, has a very distinct sound with off beat saxophone, a mix of percussion and Hip Hop-like vocals. Their music is defiantly anti-establishment and counter-cultural, but there it was being used as background music to sell Hondas.

The presenter provided other corporate ad examples from the All State insurance company, Heineken, and Verizon. The most insidious ad example that was presented was a magazine ad run by the US Army targeting Hispanics. Craig told the crowd that it featured the mother of an enlistee, since family is very important to Hispanics. Hell, here I thought all this time that family was important to all cultures. Craig said that this ad proved to be effective because “Hispanics are 16% more likely to serve in the Army.” Interesting, because according to the National Network Opposing the Militarizing of Youth’s YANO Project, Hispanics, like Blacks, are disproportionately targeted by military recruiters in urban school districts. In addition, Hispanics are entering the US military primarily out of economic necessity, since job opportunities are limited after High School and because Hispanic youth who were not born in the US and have parents who are undocumented cannot apply for college tuition assistance.

After the presentation, Craig agreed to take questions from the audience. Most everyone seemed to be interested in more ideas on how to reach this growing consumer market, but silly me had to ask something else. I said, “It seemed like all the Hispanics used in the ad campaigns were all light-skinned and middle class. Since many people from Mexico are Indigenous or have Indigenous blood and many people from the Caribbean are of African descent, how do you appeal to people who don’t look white and economically well off?” Oh, shit. The room kind of went quiet, and then Craig danced around the question by saying that of course there is tremendous diversity within the Hispanic population. “Just because people speak English in the US they are not the same as people who speak English in Canada, Eh.” At this point, he said he was on a tight schedule to catch a plane and the presentation was over.

The bad news then is that the Hispanic community will become an increasingly more intense target of the advertising community. The good news is that there are a lot of small, neighborhood Hispanic businesses that are doing great without the help of corporate advertising predators. You can find small Salvadoran restaurants featuring pupusarias around town and ice cream vendors pushing carts in the summer yelling paletas! (popsicle) The Hispanic community and any other community for that matter, doesn’t need the kind of advertising that Mr. Craig and the Ad Council practice. In fact, the advertising community should do what comedian Bill Hicks once suggested – kill themselves. We’ll all be better off.

Why ACTIVATE is Organizing against the RNC

ACTIVATE (Grand Rapids SDS) has released a statement explaining why they will be focusing much of their work over the next few months on organizing against the Republican and Democratic national conventions:

“Over the next several months, ACTIVATE (Grand Rapids SDS) will be devoting a considerable amount of our time and resources towards organizing opposition to the 2008 Republican National Convention (RNC) and Democratic National Convention (DNC).* We believe that the political conventions–the DNC in Denver and the RNC in the Twin Cities–offer tremendous opportunities to not only succeed on the national level, but also to strengthen our organizing here in Grand Rapids. Our resistance to the conventions grows out of our antiwar work over the past two years and our understanding that electoral politics will not bring about the systemic changes needed to prevent future wars and dismantle the systems of oppression (racism, patriarchy, capitalism) that keep us in chains (For more on our view of electoral politics, see: http://www.activategr.org/statements/2008-elections/).

ACTIVATE (Grand Rapids SDS) has already started to organize against the political conventions. We have endorsed the direct action strategies for both conventions and have attended various meetings planning for the conventions across the country. We have developed and delivered a presentation explaining the plans for the conventions. We have circulated a call to action within Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) calling for participation in the direct action effort to shut down the RNC and have participated in organizing against the RNC within SDS. We have also been involved in organizing with activists around Michigan as a part of Unconventional Michigan. However, this is only a start–in the coming weeks we hope to announce a variety of additional efforts including workshops, movie showings, and other such efforts.

We know that many people in Grand Rapids–perhaps the majority–will be unable to get to the conventions and understand that at first glance, organizing against the conventions may seem as if it moves us away from our local work opposing the Iraq War. However, we believe that organizing against the conventions nicely compliments our work here in Grand Rapids. By holding trainings on the various skills that people need to participate in the protests–street tactics, legal, etc–we can learn skills that have a usefulness far beyond the political conventions and that can plug into a variety of organizing efforts, including antiwar organizing. In hosting presentations about the plans for crashing the conventions, we aim to initiate conversations whereby we reflect on what has worked for the left both nationally and here in Grand Rapids over the past several years. We also will challenge and confront political candidates–of any party–when they visit Grand Rapids during the campaign season. Finally, for our own group–organizing around the political conventions is fostering connections with groups around the country and in Michigan while helping us grow in new ways and acquire new skills.

We also view organizing against the conventions as a critical component of our commitment to challenge people to think critically about the electoral system in the United States. Either through direct experience with organizing against the Iraq War or study of past social movements, we have seen that elections are a dead end route for movements seeking systemic change. Time and time again we have seen “the left”–and the countless others who do not identify as a part of the left–put their faith into electing the “right” politicians only to see those politicians stab them in the back and betray the movements and individuals that supported them. With so many people seeking “change” this year, we believe that radicals have a unique opportunity to raise important critiques about the failings of representative democracy and capitalism.

In the Spirit of Resistance,

- ACTIVATE (Grand Rapids SDS) – http://www.activategr.org

* While much of our work will focus on getting folks out to the RNC–primarily because of the Twin Cities’ proximity to Michigan–we stand in solidarity with the groups aiming to disrupt the DNC. The Democratic Party has shown that it offers no alternative to the Republicans. We have seen the Democrats’ “oppositional” and so-called “liberal” politics–the continuation of the occupation of Iraq, NAFTA and neoliberal trade agreements, “welfare reform,” the militarization of the US-Mexico border, and 500,000 Iraqi children killed during US sanctions against Iraq in the 1990s–and know that they offer no hope.”

Unconventional Michigan Forms to Organize against RNC and DNC

A new group has formed here in Michigan to oppose the 2008 Republican National Convention (RNC) and Democratic National Convention (DNC) and to organize participation in the protest by people from Michigan. The group is called Unconventional Michigan and is part of the larger Unconventional Action network that has formed over the past year to organize against the conventions.

Aside from launching a website and MySpace page, the group has prepared a presentation on the protests planned for the conventions and the history of recent mass mobilizations in North America. Unconventional Michigan is currently in the process of contacting groups across the state to setup presentations:

To Whom It May Concern,

Unconventional Michigan* is a new group that is in the process of organizing resistance to the upcoming Democratic (DNC) and Republican (RNC) national conventions this summer and facilitating participation by folks from Michigan.

Over the past year, individuals involved with Unconventional Michigan have been impressed and inspired by the organizing that has gone into planning protests against the political conventions. Unlike 2004, there has been considerable advance planning for both conventions–with much of it focusing on direct action. In addition to large scale marches and protests, plans are in place to disrupt the DNC and to actually try to shut down the RNC. These plans are based on considerable study of what has worked in recent mass mobilizations in North America (from the 1999 Seattle WTO protests to the 2004 political conventions) and input from groups across the country. Moreover, there is on-the-ground support for the protests in both Denver (for the DNC) and the Twin Cities (for the RNC).

In order to encourage people to attend the protests, Unconventional Michigan has prepared a presentation that we want to deliver to groups, co-op houses, and anyone with an interest in the protests. In addition to talking about the protests planned for this summer, we include an overview of the major mobilizations of the past several years to show how the plans for the RNC and DNC are founded on thoughtful and strategic reflection of what has (and has not) worked in the past. We also leave plenty of time for questions about this summer or past protests.

We’re eager to share our excitement about the convention protests and would love to schedule a presentation in your city. We believe that disrupting the conventions offers a unique opportunity to take our opposition to the war, ecological destruction, and other institutionalized forms of oppression to the next level. We remember the excitement that permeated the movement post-Seattle and believe that the conventions this summer could offer a similar opportunity. Moreover, we believe that talking about direct action and the political conventions could increase interest in and facilitate participation in existing radical projects across Michigan while also inspiring new projects.

Please let us know if you are willing to host a presentation or know of a group or space that we should contact about giving a presentation.

In Struggle,

NYPD Officers Acquitted in Killing of Sean Bell

In New York, a coalition of civil rights advocates are calling for a permanent state-level special prosecutor to handle police brutality cases following the acquittal of three New York police detectives in the killing of Sean Bell. The twenty-three-year-old Bell died in a hail of fifty police bullets on the morning of what would have been his wedding day in November 2006. Two of his friends were also injured in the shooting. All three men were unarmed. On Friday a judge acquitted the three undercover police detectives of all charges in the shooting death. Following the decision, the Rev. Al Sharpton threatened to shut down the city with protests.

Rev. Al Sharpton: “We strategically know how to stop this city so it will stand still and realize that you do not have the right to shoot down unarmed innocent civilians with no probable cause…But they show now that they will not hold police accountable. Well, guess what. If you won’t, we will.”

Afghan President Karzai Survives Assassination Attempt

Afghan President Hamid Karzai survived an assassination attempt on Sunday when members of the Taliban attacked a military parade in Kabul with mortar shots and gunfire. Three people were killed in the attack: a tribal chief, a member of the Afghan Parliament and a ten-year-old boy. The US-backed Karzai has survived at least three previous assassination attempts, but this was the first time there had been an attempt on him in the capital.

Bush Administration Claims It Can Ignore Anti-Torture Laws

The New York Times reports the Justice Department has told Congress that US intelligence operatives can legally use interrogation methods that are banned by US and international law if they are attempting to thwart terrorist attacks. The letters from the Justice Department show that the Bush administration believes it can ignore the Geneva Conventions and restrictions from the Supreme Court and Congress designed to prevent interrogators from torturing prisoners. In the letters, the Justice Department argues that the legality of some interrogation techniques depends on why they are being used.

Human Rights Groups Push for Trial of Rumsfeld

Meanwhile, the American Civil Liberties Union and Human Rights First have filed a motion in federal court in an effort to overturn the dismissal of a lawsuit against former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. The March 2005 lawsuit was filed on behalf of nine Iraqi and Afghan prisoners who were tortured while in US military custody.

Pentagon Admits Planning Potential Military Action Against Iran

The Washington Post reports the nation’s top military officer has said that the Pentagon is planning for “potential military courses of action” against Iran. Adm. Michael Mullen, chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said military action is one of several options against Iran. Mullen accused Iran of having a “increasingly lethal and malign influence” in Iraq. Last week, Defense Secretary Robert Gates claimed Iran is “hell-bent on acquiring nuclear weapons.” Despite the rhetoric from Washington, a spokesperson from Iran’s foreign ministry said Tehran is not concerned about a US attack.

Mohammad Ali Hosseini: “Mr. Gates and Mr. Cheney made some comments about military choice. According to the problems that the Americans face and their disastrous situation in Iraq and Afghanistan and their interior problems, we think it would be unlikely the Americans would take the decision to get themselves into a new fiasco, the consequences of which they themselves have acknowledged would be painful for the region and the world.”

Meanwhile, on Thursday, a cargo ship contracted by the US Navy fired shots at small Iranian speedboats off the Iranian coast. The cargo ship, the Westward Venture, was transporting US military hardware.

Adm. Mullen Claims N.Korea-Syria Nuke Link

In other news from the Middle East, Admiral Michael Mullen, the chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, released intelligence Friday that he said proves North Korea and Syria colluded on a nuclear facility that Israel bombed in September.

Admiral Mike Mullen: “That this facility was being built secretly and against international convention and that it was destroyed before it became operational are the key points to remember. It should serve as a reminder to us all of the very real dangers of proliferation and need to rededicate ourselves to prevent the spread of weapons of mass destruction, particularly into the hands of a state or a group with terrorist connections.”

But the Pentagon’s handling of the intelligence is coming under criticism. The head of the UN nuclear monitoring agency has questioned why the US withheld the intelligence information until now. Syria’s ambassador to the United States, Imad Moustapha, also questioned Mullen’s statement.

Imad Moustapha: “Why didn’t they rush with the evidence immediately the day they struck? Think hard. Don’t be gullible. Don’t just follow their stories. Don’t repeat–don’t fall into the same trap that the New York Times and the Washington Post have fallen to in preparation for the war in Iraq.”

Palestinian Family Killed in Israeli Shelling

In Gaza, six Palestinians, including four young siblings, died earlier today after Israeli Defense Forces shelled their home. The four siblings ranged in age from six years old to fifteen months. Residents said an Israeli shell smashed through the ceiling of a one-story house where the family was having breakfast. The children’s mother was critically wounded in the explosion.

US Firm Builds Amusement Park and Zoo Near Green Zone

Meanwhile, the Times of London reports a Los Angeles-based investment firm is pouring millions of dollars into developing a zoo and American-style amusement park next to the Green Zone. The park will feature a skateboard park, rides, a concert theater and a museum. It is being designed by the firm that developed Disneyland.

US Sergeant Acquitted in Killing of Unarmed Iraqi

In other news on Iraq, a military court-martial has acquitted a US soldier who admitted to killing an unarmed Iraqi during a house raid last year. Sgt. 1st Class Trey Corrales had been accused of premeditated murder and planting an AK-47 rifle next to the victim after the shooting. He would have faced a minimum sentence of life in prison if he had been convicted.

Pentagon Suspends Briefings for Retired Military Officers

The Pentagon has announced it is suspending its briefings for retired military officers who appear as military analysts on television and radio programs. The announcement came days after the New York Times revealed the Pentagon had recruited more than seventy-five retired military officers to appear on TV outlets as part of a propaganda program. Since 2002, retired officers working with the Pentagon made tens of thousands of appearances for television and radio networks.

27 UN Agencies Meet to Tackle Global Food Crisis

Twenty-seven United Nations agencies are gathering today in the Swiss capital Bern to develop a battle plan to deal with the global food crisis. The World Food Program has described the crisis as a silent tsunami. Aid experts say soaring global prices for food and fuel threaten to push 100 million people worldwide into hunger. Food protests are continuing across the globe. In Senegal, more than 1,000 people marched in the capital Dakar on Saturday to protest against rising food prices.

Sarata Guisse, Senegalese demonstrator: “We are holding this demonstration because we are hungry. We need to eat, we need to work, we are hungry. That’s all. We are hungry.”

Profits Soar for Global Agribusinesses & Speculators

Bush to Veto Democratic Plan to Help Homeowners

In other economic news, a top housing official has indicated President Bush will veto a plan by Democrats to help homeowners refinance their loans and stay in their homes. Deputy Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Roy Bernardi described the Democrats $15 billion housing rescue package as “a costly bailout for lenders and speculators.” Bernardi’s comments came just over a month after the Treasury Department helped orchestrate the bailout of investment bank Bear Stearns. As part of the deal, the Federal Reserve agreed to lend JPMorgan $30 billion to secure some of Bear Stearns’s mortgage investments.

Canadian Police Arrest Five Mohawk Protesters

In news from Canada, five Mohawk protesters remain in custody following their arrest on Friday. The indigenous activists were arrested after they set up a road blockade to stop developers from building on land in the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory in eastern Ontario. One of the Mohawk protesters, Shawn Brant, was arrested while giving an interview with the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network.

Shawn Brant: “This is it. Justice for First Nations communities: lock us up. Anybody who speaks out, lock ‘em up. KI6, Bob Lovelace, lock ‘em up. That’s what it’s about: lock ‘em up. Don’t fix the problems, lock ‘em up.”

Following the arrests, Mohawks in another part of Ontario set up a road blockade shutting down part of Highway Six.

Saudi Blogger Released After Four Months in Prison

And Saudi Arabia’s most popular blogger has been freed after serving four months in prison without charge. Fouad Al-Farhan was detained in December after posting critical comments about Saudi government policies. Farhan is known as the “godfather” of blogging in Saudi Arabia. He defines his online mission as the “search for freedom, dignity, justice, equality, public participation and other lost Islamic values”.

Response to Kyle Bristow Regarding Lansing Neo-Nazi Event

On Monday, Kyle Bristow, the former chair of Michigan State University’s (MSU) chapter of Young Americans for Freedom (YAF), posted a comment on the website YAF Watch in which he outlined seven alleged errors in an article that Mediamouse.org wrote about his involvement in a recent talk by Canadian neo-Nazi Paul Fromm in Lansing. Bristow, writing under the name “Godfrey de Bouillon” (a participant in the crusades whom Bristow appears to idolize as one who fought against Islam), wrote “That article on MediaMouse.org is based on lies.”

However, going through each of his points raises questions about the accuracy of Bristow’s statements and also offers an opportunity to provide useful information to our readers.

First, Bristow claimed that:

“1. The event was not cancelled. It was held at another location, which was the original intent once we found out that leftists would try to shut down the private event. The Cadillac Club was used only as a staging point.”

This may be a debate about semantics and word choice. The event, which was announced by Bristow back on March 9 as being at the Cadillac Club, was eventually cancelled due to pressure from Michigan Against White Supremacy. The original intent was to hold it at the Cadillac Club and it was always promoted as being there beforehand. The event may have been held elsewhere–indeed that we have heard reports that it was–but for all practical purposes the event as planned was cancelled.

“2. The claim that I [Bristow] planned the event because I told people about it via Facebook is asinine. Did I also plan the Michigan Republican Convention because I told people about that event via Facebook, too?”

Bristow was clearly involved in organizing the event–he did more than just send out messages via Facebook. He was scheduled to speak at the Paul Fromm event and he asks people who want to attend to email him at KyleBristow@gmail.com. Moreover, in the message posted below, it is worth noting that he says John Mangopoulos is “hosting” Jared Taylor, no such language is used for the Fromm event:

041808-bristow-facebook-01.gif

On April 10, he again said that he was giving a presentation with Paul Fromm and posted details about expenses that seem to indicate knowledge of the expenses associated with the event:

041808-bristow-facebook-02.gif

If Bristow really did not organize the event, he should tell us who did.

“3. The MSU-YAF contingent at the event was more than just Ogonowski and I. You would be surprised with the number of members we have gained since the Walid Shoebat event, which occurred without left-wing scum trying to shout the speaker down. Ever since we began to have our meetings off campus, where the leftists can’t track us, things have been going much better. Recruitment and funding are both through the roof.”

We only reported that Bristow and Ogonowski attended because that was the information we had via YAF Watch. The fact that he admits that more members of MSU-YAF attended makes a clear argument that MSU-YAF is indeed a “hate group” that is increasingly favoring racist ideologies.

“4. Evan Thomas, Evan Kuettner, or Evan Cutner (as maws.wordpress.com called him) is not a real person. He is as real as Santa Claus. The picture used on MediaMouse.org is of some guy with a cell phone whom I do not personally know, but did attend the Nick Griffin event.”

To be sure, we do not know if “Evan Thomas” is the real name of the person that Bristow references. We do know that it is the name most often used by a racist organizer who posts using the name “David Starr Jordan” on the white supremacist website Stormfront.org.” Evan Thomas has been a racist organizer since he was a teenager:

042508-stormfront-01.gif

Bristow is right that Evan Thomas attended the Nick Griffin speech, Mediamouse.org wrote about how he attended with other members of Stormfront.org. However, it is interesting that Bristow says he does not know him. In posts on Stormfront.org, one of the attendees said that they ate dinner with Nick Griffin and Evan Thomas following the lecture. Considering that Griffin left with Bristow, it seems reasonable to assume that Bristow was at this dinner if it happened:

“5. The event had nothing to do with racism, white supremacy, or any variation of what is called racialism. It was only about free speech, and believe it or not, liberal / Marxist college professors from UM and WMU were present for the event. Whites even made up a minority of the people in attendance for the speeches!”

The event had everything to do with racism. Paul Fromm is a neo-Nazi. While we cannot verify its accuracy, someone who posted a comment on Mediamouse.org from the Courtyard by Mariott Hotel in Lansing claiming that the speech happened said “Paul Fromm spoke a marvelous piece about the demographic changes threat to western civilization.” Based Fromm’s previous comments, “demographic changes” should be read as “immigration” by people of color which he opposes. It’s also intersting that “liberal / Marxist” individuals would be in attendence since Bristow specifically said that the event was being kept private to keep out leftists and the media.

“6. Nick Griffin is not a “fascist.” He is no different than Pat Buchanan, Tom Tancredo, Geert Wilders, or any other conservative with nationalistic leanings. A “fascist,” as defined by Mussolini, is someone who promotes corporatism. The true contemporary fascists are the ones who advocate for the warfare / welfare state (i.e., neoconservatives).”

Nick Griffin, and the British National Party (BNP) of which he is a part, is fascist. Bristow’s definition of fascism as simply “corporatism” is incredibly simplistic. Even the Merriam-Webster dictionary defines fascism in a more nuanced manner as:

“a political philosophy, movement, or regime (as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition”

Those who write about rightwing movements acknowledge that fascism is a complex ideology that borrows components from Marixsm, liberalism, and conservatism while simultaneously being hostile to all three. Writing for the Political Research Associates, Matthew Lyons describes fascism as:

“a form of extreme right-wing ideology that celebrates the nation or the race as an organic community transcending all other loyalties. It emphasizes a myth of national or racial rebirth after a period of decline or destruction. To this end, fascism calls for a “spiritual revolution” against signs of moral decay such as individualism and materialism, and seeks to purge “alien” forces and groups that threaten the organic community. Fascism tends to celebrate masculinity, youth, mystical unity, and the regenerative power of violence. Often, but not always, it promotes racial superiority doctrines, ethnic persecution, imperialist expansion, and genocide. At the same time, fascists may embrace a form of internationalism based on either racial or ideological solidarity across national boundaries. Usually fascism espouses open male supremacy, though sometimes it may also promote female solidarity and new opportunities for women of the privileged nation or race.”

To this end, both Nick Griffin and the party he leads (the BNP) are fascist. The founder of the party, John Tyndall, and Nick Griffin both got their start in fascist politics in the 1970s as part of the National Front. Searchlight Magazine describes the BNP’s ideology:

“The BNP’s racism is its most public expression of bigotry. However, what distinguishes the BNP as a fascist organisation is its fusion of nationalism, anti-communism, anti-rationality and crucially antisemitism and racism. The fact that its entire world view is refracted through the prism of antisemitism and race distinguishes it from all legitimate political parties. Yes, the other political parties have racists in them, they even pass racist immigration laws, but they don’t reduce everything to race. This was the Nazi contribution to European fascism – where race is all. This makes the BNP not only a fascist party but a nazi one.”

Nick Griffin has lead an effort to “mainstream” the BNP while at the same time the Party continues to refine its fascist ideology. While the language may be slightly toned down, it still campaigns on racist platforms and holds the same racist positions.

“7. Jared Taylor is not a “white supremacist.” He is married to a Jewish woman, and in his book “Paved With Good Intentions,” he ridiculed racist groups like the Ku Klux Klan by writing:

“A look beneath the white sheets of the Ku Klux Klan does not reveal college professors and bank presidents but high-school dropouts and gas station attendants. Is this minuscule band of losers supposed to be capable of oppressing an entire race? Are they the people who set the tone for America?”"

Jared Taylor is a white supremacist. Mediamouse.org wrote at length about Taylor’s racism back in December of last year. While it is true that Taylor is not an anti-Semite, the fact that he is “married to a Jewish woman” does nothing to prove that he is not a white supremacist. Similarly, his rejection of the Ku Klux Klan does not prove that he is not a racist. Taylor and his American Renaissance newspaper use statistics–often selectively excerpted or cited–to try to “prove” differences between races. Taylor has also regularly spoken at events organized by white supremacists and has links to the larger white supremacist movement in the United States.
