Grand Rapids area Republican Representative Vern Ehlers was quoted yesterday in a WOOD TV 8 story expressing disappointment that the $700 billion bailout bill failed. Interestingly, Ehlers–who supported the bill as being necessary “to make sure that we don’t get a Depression, or even a major recession out of this”–supported the bill despite significant opposition from his constituents. According to the story, Ehlers “Washington office was bombarded with more than 1,000 e-mails and phone calls Monday opposing the bailout.” Despite this, Ehlers still voted for the bill.
Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time that Ehlers has decided that his own personal feelings are more important than representing his constituents. Back in 2002, Ehlers voted to authorize the use of military force in Iraq. At the time, The Grand Rapids Press quoted a spokesman for Ehlers who said that correspondence to Ehlers’ office was 50-to-1 against war with Iraq.
