It is so important that both Palestine and Israel live in secure safe borders without the fear of tyranny. One problem that occurs when trying to understand the politics of the region is that Israel and Palestine are not equals politically and militarily. Palestine does not have a central government free to conduct its affairs without interference from the occupying power, Israel. Nor does it have a navy or air force. But we continue to discuss the situation as though they are equally powerful partners.

Palestine has recognized Israel's right to exist on more than one occasion. Israel, however, does not recognize the right of Palestine as an independent sovereign nation. I believe the Israelis and Palestinians are tired of the violence and want nothing but peace. The Israeli press is very critical of its occupation of Palestinians and its government's decision to continually wage war on Palestine. The Palestinian press is critical of the violence engendered by its people and the of the problems within its own government. But in America we have difficulty recognizing that Israel is the occupier and is more powerful than Palestine. Once we see this reality, it is easier to see a solution to the ongoing conflict.

The Palestinians did not start this recent exchange of military fire. As has been reported in most of the world, but not in the US, Israel first bombed the Gaza area on November 4. James Petras and other writers have documented that Israel has been planning this assault in order to wipe out Hamas. Check out the links provided in the story, particularly Electronic Intifada.

In addition, Israel's bombing has killed more than 400 civilians and wounded over 2,000. The Israeli military is preventing international medical relief from entering the area to treat the wounded, bombed the Gaza hospital and the university, all of which are violations of International Law.

Understanding what is happening and who is responsible for what atrocities makes the above demands very reasonable.

These are crazy demands, what did the Palestinians thins would happen when they start firing missiles at Israel as soon as the cease fire ends. Until they recognize the right for Israel to exist and as long as they continue to fire missiles, they are getting exactly what they ask for.
