Democratic Congressperson John Murtha Calls for Immediate Withdrawal from Iraq

|

Representative John Murtha, a Democratic Congressperson from Pennsylvania, yesterday called for the immediate withdrawal of the United States military from Iraq. He described the ongoing occupation of Iraq as "...a flawed policy wrapped in illusion. It is time for a change in direction. Our military is suffering, the future of our country is at risk," and advocated for a withdrawal beginning in mid-December after the Iraqi elections. Representative Murtha, who is a conservative and "hawkish" Democrat, reflects the growing change in policy that will be necessary if Democrats want to remain relevant as an opposition party. With public opinion turning solidly against the war and the Bush administration in a "nosedive," the Democratic Party has the opportunity to come out strongly against the war.
