The local media has provided very little coverage of the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA), despite the fact that CAFTA is one of the most divisive trade agreements to come before Congress. While numerous news releases have been sent to the local media about events organized by the Stop CAFTA Campaign, including a press conference announcing endorsers of the campaign and protests at town hall meeting with Representative Vern Ehlers back in April, the media has largely chosen to ignore CAFTA. The Grand Rapids Press ran one story on CAFTA on Monday in its business section, discussing how next week's World Trade Week will feature discussions on CAFTA. The article failed to mention local and national opposition to the agreement, as well as planned protests against World Trade Week. An essay submitted to The Grand Rapids Press for inclusion as a "Sunday Essay" was rejected for publication, with an editor from The Press arguing that free-markets and trade always increase democracy.
In light of the overall media blackout on CAFTA, the Stop CAFTA Campaign is asking supporters of the campaign to flood the local news stations with a news release explaining why the group is opposed to CAFTA. The news release can be submitted via fax and people faxing the news release are encouraged to do follow up phone calls to make sure the various media outlets received it and to demand that they cover CAFTA. Contact numbers for the local media can be found online in the GRIID Media Directory.
