A new poll has found that support for the Iraq war is at its lost level since the start of the conflict. Of those polled, 41% of people found that the war was worth it while 57% say that it was not, with 49% of those polls stating that the war "was a mistake" and 56% stating that the war was "going badly." Support for the war peaked shortly after the fall of Baghdad in April 2003 when 76% of the public thought the war was worth fighting.
The new numbers come as the US military and the Bush administration continues to claim that the situation is improving in Iraq. However, such claims seem relatively meaningless in light of what is actually happening in Iraq. The war is far exceeding cost estimates with a vote expected soon on another supplemental budget request to cover expenses from the war, despite the fact that US government officials have just opened an investigation into the suspected embezzling of $100 million dollars from Iraq reconstruction funds as reconstruction has largely stalled. Iraqi civilians are growing increasingly fed up with the occupation and constant violence, much of it perpetrated by US troops, who are unaccountable for their abuses of ordinary Iraqis and who have been able to do little to stop a resistance which was likely spurred by US actions in Fallujah.
