Two days after being voted “Grinch of the Year” in an annual poll of the most greedy corporations, Wal-Mart has been ordered to pay $172 million in compensation to employees in California. A California court found that Wal-Mart violated a state law that required employers to give employees an unpaid half-hour lunch break if they worked more than six hours. The $172 million award consisted of $57 million in general damages and $115 million in punitive damages with an estimated 100,000 workers eligible for a portion of the settlement.
