12/09/03 - A Tale of Two Occupations

"You have to understand the Arab mind," Capt. Todd Brown, a company commander with the Fourth Infantry Division, said as he stood outside the gates of Abu Hishma. "The only thing they understand is force — force, pride and saving face."

Increasingly, the US occupation is looking and sounding like the Israeli occupation of Palestine. Here are a couple articles about the connections between the two occupations.

11/19/03 - Wounded

Often when stories of violence in Iraq or Palestine are reported in the media, the focus is on the number of deaths with the wounded being an afterthought. Perhaps we need a better word than “wounded”, which can mean anything from a scraped knee to lost limbs and brain damage. Many of the wounded reported in news articles have received horrific injuries and the general description of “wounded” does not do justice to the severity of their condition. The first article linked today is by a American plastic surgeon who worked in Nablus in the West Bank. The second link it to his photo gallery. The other two articles are about wounded US soldiers in Iraq.

11/18/03 - Destroying homes in Iraq

US troops in Iraq have adopted the Israeli practice of destroying the homes of suspected militants in Iraq. "This is something Sharon would do," said 41-year-old farmer Jamel Shahab, referring to the Israeli prime minister, Ariel Sharon. "What's happening in Iraq is just like Palestine." To the rest of the world, the US occupation of Iraq is looking more and more like the Israeli occupation of Palestine. The first link for today talks about this new US tactic. The other two links talk about the humanitarian disaster that the Israeli occupation has been for the Palestinians.
