08/13/03 - A Progressive/Left Strategy for Election 2004?

Michael Albert has proposed an interesting solution to the dilemma facing the "left" in the United States -- how can Bush be beat without completely selling out everything the "left" claims to believe by supporting a lackluster or downright offensive Democratic candidate. Of all the talk about the 2004 Election in progressive and mainstream media, Albert has proposed the only solution so far that looks at longterm strategy of building a renewed "left" in the United States, not just removing Bush from office.

There have also been some interesting articles questioning Howard Dean's status as a "progressive" and an examination of his policies indicates that he is not nearly as radical as what the mainstream media, or even other progressives, like to claim. While the purpose of this entry is not to discourage people from supporting Howard Dean, indeed he is the most interesting thing happening in the Democratic Party, the articles on Dean were included to illustrate that simply voting for a candidate will never be enough to get the changes we want to see. It is going to take both longterm organizing and institution building, both inside and outside the electoral process, to bring about true change in the United States, not just removing George W. Bush from office.
