08/19/03 - More on the Media at Home and in Iraq

By now regular readers of this update, and indeed most everyone against the war on Iraq, is familiar with the way in which the media helped to promote the war in Iraq--unquestioning and echoing the official pronouncements of the US government, the majority of which have since proven to be false. Alexander Cockburn of CounterPunch has published an interesting look at how, Judy Miller, of the New York Times, the great "liberal" newspaper, repeated a number of official lies from late to 2001 to early 2003, all of which contributed to a general climate of fear.

In Iraq, US soldiers have killed yet another journalist, this time soldiers allegedly mistook his camera for a rocket propelled grenade launcher. This incident follows a number of killings of journalists and other attempts, including detentions and threats, to silence journalists reporting on what is really going on in Iraq.
