08/27/03 - Bush's Statements and the Reality of War and Occupation

Once again President George W. Bush took the opportunity today to use unjustified statements intended to scare people as a way of gaining support for the occupation of Iraq. The President claimed that the United States is in Iraq "so our people will not have to confront terrorist violence in New York or St. Louis or Los Angeles." Of course, there never was any real evidence that Iraq was any threat to the United States, and indeed various accusations made by the administration continue to unravel, as shown in this Monday's update. Today's articles look at the reality of what is happening in Iraq. As a result of the war and the occupation, Iraq is a more dangerous place for both the Iraqis who live there and are being unjustly occupied, as well as US soldiers who are in a place where they are not wanted by a large portion of the population.
