09/05/03 - US Court Blocks New FCC Rules

A federal court has blocked the new FCC (Federal Communications Commission) rules from taking effect with a temporary injunction, accepting the Prometheus Radio Project's assertion that a full judicial review is needed. The new rules, which would allow a single company to own TV stations that reach 45% of the national audience, up from 35%, as well as owning radio, TV and newspaper outlets within a single city, are blocked from taking effect until a full judicial review is undertaken.

Critics of the Iraq war understand the risks of further consolidation of media--more homoginized and non-dissenting coverage. It is already hard enough to find critical and dissenting views in the corporate media and further consolidation will only make it worse.
