09/22/03 - Bush's Iraq Dream Crumbles All Around Him

Whether or not the Bush administration ever had a plan for Iraq beyond being greeted as liberators is open for debate, but that debate is pretty much irrelevant now as the Iraq policy has almost completely collapsed. While we should always be skeptical of polls, a recent Newsweek poll found that only 46% of those polled approve of Bush's Iraq policy. You can tell things are pretty bad when even the loyal US media can't hide the failure of the policy.

The Newsweek poll is only part of a string of bad news for the Bush administration. At least six more US soliders were killed in Iraq this week, while there have been a number of recent reports of increasing discontent within the military. In addition to discontent among troops on the ground in Iraq, families of reservists are upset over recent changes in the length of tours of duty. Moreover, it is far from certain that the United Nations will send troops to Iraq, especially with France's reaffirmation on Saturday that they will only support the plan if Iraqi sovereignty is granted "within a few months."
