It is becoming more and more obvious that the “rebuilding” of Iraq is being used as a pretext by various interests to line their pockets with lucrative contracts. This has become so obvious that even the Democrats are starting to make noise about it (see “Democrats warn of 'profiteering' in reconstruction contracts”). Critisism of the “rebuilding” process is also coming from within Iraq, where members of the Iraqi council are challenging Paul Bremmer on how money is being spent (see “Questions are Raised on Awarding of Contracts in Iraq”). And it is not just in the “rebuilding” process that US taxpayers money is being wasted. According to the article from the World Federalist Association, U.S. taxpayers are now shouldering the high costs of unilateral inspections alone.
