The Turkish government, at he request of the US, has agreed to send combat troops to assist in the occupation of Iraq. Given the record of Turkish oppression against the Kurds, who make up a large part of Iraq’s population, the Iraqi governing council is opposed to this plan. Yet, the Iraqi council can do nothing about it since the real power in Iraq lies in the hands of the US occupying authority. The US claims to be fostering democracy in Iraq and yet is willing to ignore the near unanimous opposition from the Iraqi governing council on bringing Turkish troops into Iraq.
