10/20/03 - Winning “Hearts and Minds”

During the US war in Vietnam, there was a lot of talk about how the US military was “winning the hearts and minds” of the Vietnamese. Of course this all proved to be false, US military tactics were aimed at quelling the Vietnamese resistance through use of force and violence, not by “winning hearts and minds”. The first article is a good illustration of these tactics of force and violence, and of the Pentagons refusal to recognize these facts. Although these events happened over thirty years ago, they are still relevant today because now we are occupying another foreign country. The pentagon is trying to spin the situation, saying that the Iraqis want us there. We heard this thirty-some years ago and it wasn’t true, do we really believe them this time around?
