10/30/03 - U.S. War Crimes

According to international law, all casualties inflicted upon a nation by another nation in an illegal war of aggression are considered war crimes. Any attack by one nation upon another without approval by the UN Security Council is an act of illegal aggression. That means that the 15,000 Iraqis killed in the war all constitute war crimes committed by the United States. One would think that a “liberal” press might point this rather elementary fact out And yet have any of us seen this mentioned in the mainstream press at all? Instead we get the unabashed flag waving of Fox News on one extreme and on the other end we get the pathetic apologetics of supposed “liberals” like Thomas Friedman of the NYTimes. Here is a sampling from Friedman’s column in today’s NYTimes: “They(Iraq resistance) understand that U.S. power is not being used in Iraq for oil, or imperialism, or to shore up a corrupt status quo, as it was in Vietnam and elsewhere in the Arab world during the cold war. They understand that this is the most radical-liberal revolutionary war the U.S. has ever launched — a war of choice to install some democracy in the heart of the Arab-Muslim world.”(for the whole column, go here) One has to ask how this is any different than the pro war ranting of the right?
