Protesters launch RNC actions Sunday

Sunday was not a day of rest for protesters gathered in Minneapolis/St. Paul for the

Republican National Convention. Law enforcement didn't take a day off, either. Hundreds of activists joined the Veterans for Peace for a rally at the state capitol and a march on the Excel Center that, according to a report filed by Jeff Severns Guntzel of the Minnesota Independent, ended in nine arrests, including an elderly nun with the Sisters of St. Joseph.

Marchers carried paper tombstones with the name of US and Iraqi war dead. To draw attention to the illegal detentions and torture continuing at the U.S. Guantanamo Bay prison, another group of marchers wore orange jumpsuits with the name of a detainee and black masks.

In a separate action, a non-partisan Liberty Parade marched on Nicollet Mall in Minneapolis. Heckled by Republicans staying at the motels the route passed, marchers included polar bear puppets, zombies, Ron Paul supporters, a fake Barbara Bush motorcade and the Missile Dick Chicks from Crawford, Texas singing "Bomb Iran" to the tune of the Beach Boys' "Barbara Ann."

Meanwhile, the National Lawyers Guild and Communities United Against Police Brutality (CUAPB) filed an emergency motion late Saturday asking that police be prevented seizing independent journalists' video equipment and cell phones.
