We're currently taking a break, you can read more about why here. Our archived news and book reviews are still online and you can view or search the old site if you wish. We're aggregating headlines from some our favorite sources at MediaMouse.org, so check that out if you are interested.

RSS/XML Feeds

RSS or XML feeds allow you to subscribe to web sites and have content downloaded automatically to your computer. In order to make use of feeds, you need to have a news reader on your computer.

News Readers

In order to make use of feeds, you need to have a feed reader. Feed readers allow you to add the feeds that you wish to read and then automatically present that information for your use. They come in two varities, web-based and software-based, with the basic difference being that web-based feed readers can be used on any computer with internet access (for example, in a computer lab).

Some web-based feed readers include Bloglines and NewsGator Online, both of which are free services that were designed specifically for reading feeds. Additionally, My Yahoo! allows you to subscribe to feeds and have them display on your custom page.

Software-based feed readers include FeedDemon, FeedReader, and NewsGator for Microsoft Outlook for Microsoft Windows. For OS X, the most popular feed reader is NetNewsWire.

Additionally, some web browsers, including Safari for Mac OS X and Mozilla Firefox have built-in support for feeds.

Podcasts

"Podcasting" is a way to have new radio programs downloaded onto your computer or portable music player automatically.

For more information:

To get started, you will need to install a podcasting program, a number of which are freely available for Mac, Windows, and Linux.
