Neo-Nazis Protest Barack Obama

In a stark reminder that organized racism has a strong presence in Michigan, The Michigan Messenger reported that “Two white males, one wearing a red shirt with a swastika and the other wearing a Knight of the Ku Klux Klan t-shirt are standing across from the Van Andel Arena, jeering at people as they emerge from the Arena after Barack Obama’s campaign event.”

A picture of the two men from the Michigan Messenger:

The two appear to be either members or former members of the Michigan Unit of the National Socialist Movement (NSM), one of the largest neo-Nazi groups in the United States. The man in the swastika t-shirt attended a white supremacist rally last year in Kalamazoo and is the vocalist for the neo-Nazi band Total War:

The other man appears to be Dan Hill, the leader of the Michigan NSM. Here’s Hill at an NSM rally in Madison:

The NSM has maintained an active presence in Michigan for several years and recently moved its national headquarters to Detroit. To read more about the NSM’s ideology, see the Mediamouse.org article titled “National Socialist Movement (NSM) Advocates for White Society Excluding Jewish, Homosexual, and ‘Non-White’ Peoples .”

Hate Group List Includes 26 Groups in Michigan

The Southern Poverty Law Center has released its annual list of “hate groups” in the United States, identifying 888 active racist, fascist, and anti-Semitic groups across the country. Of the groups identified by the Southern Poverty Law Center, 26 are located in Michigan. With the exception of Ohio, Michigan has the largest number of hate groups in the Great Lakes region.

The Southern Poverty Law Center described a “hate group” as one that has “beliefs or practices that attack or malign an entire class of people, typically for their immutable characteristics.” They further add that:

“Hate group activities can include criminal acts, marches, rallies, speeches, meetings, leafleting or publishing. Websites appearing to be merely the work of a single individual, rather than the publication of a group, are not included in this list. Listing here does not imply a group advocates or engages in violence or other criminal activity.”

Over the past few years, several of these groups have been written about on Mediamouse.org, especially in our “Far Right in West Michigan” database. The groups located in West Michigan include:

* The Council of Conservative Citizens – Caledonia

* National Socialist Movement (NSM) located in Grand Rapids

* White Voices of America – Grand Haven

The rest of the groups listed include:

* American National Socialist Workers’ Party – Jackson

* American Nazi Party – Westland

* Brotherhood of Klans Knights Ku Klux Klan – Ironwood

* By Yahweh’s Design – Stevensville

* Charles Darwin Research Institute – Port Huron

* Nation of Islam – Detroit

* National Knights of the Ku Klux Klan

* National Socialist Aryan Order – Davison

* National Socialist Movement – Detroit

* Northern Hammerskins – Detroit

* NS Publications – Wyandotte

* United Northern and Southern Knights of the Ku Klux Klan – Fraser

* Volksfront – Detroit

* Yahweh’s Truth – Essexville

* Young Americans for Freedom at Michigan State University – Lansing

In addition, there are various other groups that don’t have specific jurisdictions including the Imperial Klans of America, National Vanguard, the Romanian National Vanguard, and chapters of the National Socialist Movement.

Neo-Nazi Group Moves its Headquarters to Detroit

photo of jeff schoep

The neo-Nazi National Socialist Movement (NSM)–a prominent racist group that has been active across the United States and who refers to themselves as “America’s Nazi Party”–has announced that it is has moved its national headquarters to Detroit.

According to an article in the Minnesota Monitor, NSM’s head–Jeff Schoep–has moved from Hutchinson, Minnesota to Detroit, Michigan. Schoep has run the National Socialist Movement since 1994 and has had an active role organizing and speaking at rallies around the country, including an April 2006 rally on the steps of the capitol building in Lansing. Michigan has been home to several NSM “units” based in cities such as Cadillac and Grand Rapids. Most recently, members of the Michigan NSM attended a racist rally in Kalamazoo back in August of 2007.

According to the NSM, their “core beliefs” are:

“…defending the rights of white people everywhere, preservation of our European culture and heritage, strengthening family values, reform of illegal immigration policies, and immediate withdrawal of our national military from an illegal Middle Eastern occupation and promotion of white separation.”

While the NSM’s rhetoric and politics often have a rightwing populist tinge to them, the NSM is clearly a racist group–from its wearing of Nazi uniforms to repeated use of racial scapegoating. In his most recent column titled “The Will to Fight,” Jeff Schoep praised the alleged triumphs of the white race:

“We are of the Race that drove Genghis Khan and the Huns from Europe, the Race that claimed America, and nearly rid it of the pestilence of the American Indians, the Race that drove the mongrel Mexicans out during the Mexican-American war, and many other glorious accomplishments throughout history!”

He went on to state that in light of the economic situation in the United States, the NSM’s program could be pushed into the mainstream, just as National Socialism was brought into the mainstream in Germany in the 1930s. While it is hard to see the NSM’s program making real progress, we have seen the growth of racist groups in Michigan over the past several years as well as an increase in anti-immigrant racism across the United States that has coincided in part with economic downturns. In this sense, it is important that we take racist groups seriously. They are aggressively seeking ways to blame people of color and immigrants for the problems in this country, attempting turn what is legitimate discontent–for example over the ramifications of neoliberal trade agreements such as NAFTA that has cost thousands of jobs in Michigan–into support for racist and fascist policies.

Nazi Rally Cost State Police $171,000

According to reporting in the corporate media, Saturday’s Nazi rally in Lansing by the National Socialist Movement (NSM), cost the Michigan State Police $171,000. The amount includes $105,000 spent on police overtime for the 221 officers provided by the Michigan State Police and $2,512 to fuel one of two helicopters that patrolled protestors. The city of Lansing has estimated that they spent $75,000 on the rally, including $25,000 for “equipment” and $50,000 for overtime to pay for police and fire officials. City officials in Lansing have publicly stated that the expenses were “worth it” as the massive security presence prevented violence and consequently upheld the city’s reputation. Of course, questions remain regarding how Lansing is going to pay for the security costs, with the city having a $11 million budget deficit for 2007 and Mayor Virg Bernero already proposing that less money be spent on roadwork, cemetery maintenance, and other such “non-essential” services.

Hundreds Protest Neo-Nazi National Socialist Movement in Lansing

photo from lansing nazi protest

Hundreds of protestors outnumbered the neo-Nazi National Socialist Movement (NSM) at their national rally on Saturday in Lansing. Before the event, the NSM claimed that they would have over 200 members and supporters in attendance, however, the group mustered well less than 80 members with fewer than 10 supporters for their rally which lasted from about 2:15pm to 4:00pm on the steps of the capitol building. Protestors, who were separated in two groups due to a decision made by some protestors to stay out of the “protest pens” designated by the police, numbered between 600 and 800 according to eyewitness and media accounts.

The protest organized by the Lansing Coalition Against Nazis (LCAN) began at 12:30pm in Riverfront Park at the corner of Michigan and Grand with a couple brief speeches leading up to a march that left at 1:00pm. The march, which consisted of a couple of hundred people, was quite energetic with drums, several large banners featuring anti-Nazi slogans (“No Nazis, No MCRI [Michigan Civil Rights Initiative],” “No Nazis, No KKK, No Fascist USA,” “Hate Speech Leads to Hate Crime,” “Nazis Not Welcome”) and several chants led by both march organizers and by people within the crowd. The march ended at the corner of Washington and Michigan where the group initially moved towards one of the security checkpoints and then moved back once it seemed that the police were maneuvering to contain the march. The march, after a brief confrontation with one Nazi supporter that resulted in one arrest, eventually settled at this spot for what essentially was a rally held outside the protest in an attempt to setup a “noise blockade” against the Nazis. It is hard to measure the effectiveness of the noise blockade because protest participants were unable to hear the Nazis but there were reports from arrested protestors that they could hear the Nazis while in jail (the jail was located right next to the crowd). The crowd’s energy was kept high with chants such as “Fuck the Aryan Nation,” “No Nazis, No KKK, No Fascist Us,” “Hey Nazis, What’s Up, What’s Up, You’ve Come to our Town and we’re going to Fuck you Up,” “Cops and Klan, Hand in Hand,” and “Up, Up with the People, and Down, Down, with the Nazis.” Throughout this rally, the cops moved into arrest people wearing bandanas or to confiscate banners and other supplies in several small police-initiated scuffles. Short impromptu speeches also addressed the obligation of people to work in the communities that the Nazis are targeting—primarily those who have been victimized by global capitalism and who have been targeted by the Nazis’ rhetoric of scapegoating.

Following the end of the Nazis rally, several protestors who were inside of the designated protest pen (some of whom toppled the fence designed to protect the Nazis) joined up with the LCAN sponsored protest and began rapidly marching through the streets near the capitol building in search of Nazis or their supporters. The march frequently turned in to a running group with several people surging ahead to confront Nazi supporters, many of whom were spit on, hit with construction fences, punched, or hit with rocks before people were able to move in to protect the Nazi supporters and disperse protestors. During these scuffles a police van got its window smashed after the police used it to shelter a beaten Nazi supporter, prompting mounted and riot police to move in to push the group east of Washington. The group decided to march towards Eastern High School to join the city sponsored “Diversity Rally” in an unpermitted march that stopped traffic along Shiawassee and garnered a show of support from community members along the route. As the group approached the Diversity Rally, the police positioned several dozen riot police armed with rubber bullet guns, tear gas, and batons in order to prevent the marchers from joining up with the rally. In the days before the rally, the police and city said they would allow the Nazis to attend the Diversity Rally but they restricted protestors demonstrating against the Nazis from entering and later portrayed the group as a “mob” in the media. After the group was denied access to the Diversity Rally it marched to intersection of Michigan and Grand, where the several dozen riot police and state police moved in and an order was given to disperse from the park or be arrested. Protestors dispersed at that point because there was nothing to be gained by continuing the protest.

The corporate media, which spent several weeks both in Lansing and in Michigan as a whole focusing on security preparations, largely focused their post-rally coverage on how the police prevented violence and kept “order” during the protest. Even in light of the physical attacks on at least three Nazi supporters, the media stuck to this line and downplayed the arrests of sixteen protestors, instead choosing to emphasize the success of the preparations of state and local police. While all media reports on the rally prominently featured the protests, it was rare that they did so in any substantive manner, instead choosing to quote people who discussed the need to come out and show “love” in the face of hate. In the same manner that media failed to fully engage the reasons why groups organized against the Nazis, media reports also failed to engage the substance of Nazism and instead reported on the Nazis as if they were just another political party or group in United States and not a movement based on an ideology responsible for the deaths of some six million people in concentration camps. The corporate media described how the NSM promised that they would “close the borders” because “the people” allegedly want the borders closed and that the NSM will participate in upcoming elections in the United States. The reporting largely ignored the NSM’s racism, despite the fact that racism is the crux of their ideology and political movement.

The NSM has announced that it plans further rallies and activities in Michigan. The NSM initially expressed considerable frustration with the way the rally went, citing the fact that the strict security allegedly kept away their supporters, that the media underplayed their numbers, and that multiple supporters were physically beaten leaving the rally. The NSM plans to hold an organizational meeting for new members in Lansing within the next two weeks, citing what they termed an “amazing” response with three-dozen inquiries coming from Michigan residents. Earlier in the week, anti-racist and anti-fascist activists protested the NSM in Grand Rapids and exposed Ken Mathews, a Grand Rapids resident who leads the Southeast Michigan Unit of the NSM. The Michigan NSM, termed “Unit Hitler” by the NSM’s spokesperson Bill White was given a “Unit Award” for its rapid growth and its contributions to the Nazi movement.

Anti-Racists Leaflet NSM Leader’s Neighborhood, Surprise Grand Rapids NSM Leader Ken Mathews and Bill White

On Thursday evening, a group of anti-racist and anti-fascist activists leafleted the neighborhood of a National Socialist Movement (NSM) leader in Michigan, Ken Mathews, who is the head of the Grand Rapids chapter and is in command of the entire Southwest Michigan section of the NSM.

The activists leafleted the northeast side neighborhood where Ken Matthews lives–a diverse working-class neighborhood that was entirely unaware that their neighbor was a neo-nazi leader. The group went door-to-door for several blocks near Matthews’ house handing out a leaflet that warned neighbors about the fact that Matthews was a neo-nazi as well as the fact that Mathews has welcomed over 100 neo-nazis to come to Grand Rapids to stay at a local motel for both a national private meeting of the NSM on Friday and to use Grand Rapids as staging point for their national rally in Lansing on Saturday. Neighbors reacted with a mix of shock and concern when activists explained who Matthews was and that they have a neo-nazi leader living in their neighborhood. The activists explained to people that this weekend, beginning Thursday with the birthday of Adolf Hitler, historically sees an increase in white supremacist activity with the Oklahoma City bombings, the Ruby Ridge standoff, and the Columbine high school shootings. Additionally, the leaflet contained information about where the neo-Nazis were staying and encouraged residents to contact the motel where the neo-nazis are staying and demand that they drop the reservations. Throughout the time that the activists were leafleting, all three local television news stations covered the action and did interviews with a press contact, resulting in further pressure on the NSM both locally and as a whole.

After leafleting the surrounding streets, the group started leafleting on Mathews’ street and continued to receive a favorable response from the multi-racial block. As the activists moved towards Ken Mathews’ house (41 Grove St NE) for a demonstration, one of the group spotted Bill White, national spokesman for the NSM, walking from his car into the house while wearing an NSM t-shirt. The group unfurled a “Nazis not Welcome” banner as one of the group knocked on the door and called for Ken and Bill to come out. They ignore repeated calls from the group, many of whom taunt them about what they are going to write about the event on their website and how White always says that he is ready for a debate but is turning down a good opportunity. The group voted to continue to stand outside the house while other members started taking photographs of Bill White’s car (Virginia license plate number JXB-5595) and the contents that he left visibly in the vehicle, including a copy of the injunction that the NSM filed in court yesterday as well as a Nora Roberts romance novel. Shortly thereafter three police cars responded after they were called by someone inside of Mathews’ house. The police preceded to talk to Bill White on the screen porch while activists continued to yell for him to come out using taunts such as “but you love the media Bill” (at that time all three media outlets were still there). The police did detain one person temporarily for not providing identification and claimed that we needed a permit, but given that the action had accomplished its goals, the group decided to disperse.

People are encouraged to contact the Motel 6 on Alpine where the neo-Nazis are staying to encourage the hotel to drop their reservations:

Neo-Nazis have placed reservations (#176180 – rooms blocked off under Ken Mathews) for this Friday and Saturday night at the Motel 6 at 777 3 Mile Rd at the corner of Alpine Ave (616-784-9375).

If you object to having dozens of Neo-Nazis gathering in your community, we encourage you to contact the Accor reservation center at 800-221-4542 and the Motel 6 reservation center at 800-466- 8356 and let them know your concerns. Contact Ken Mathews directly to let him know that his issues are not popularly welcomed in this community at 616-451-9194.

Shortly after the protestors left, Bill White posted an account of the protest to his website on which he claimed that anti-racists “attacked” the home of a member of the NSM and were dispersed by police before the confrontation could escalate. Also in the account, White confirms both that members at the home were armed and that the additional members of the NSM are staying in Grand Rapids.

Additionally, the Nazis are leaving the aformentioned Motel 6 around 4:30pm today for their “national private meeting” that will be held an undisclosed location and are expected to leave Saturday around 11:00am or 12:00pm for their rally in Lansing.

Neo-Nazi Bill White Defends Hitler, Attacks Activists on Lansing Radio Program

Last night on the radio station Impact 89 FM in Lansing, neo-Nazi spokesperson for the National Socialist Movement (NSM), Bill White, appeared on the City Pulse’s weekly radio program to discuss the NSM’s Saturday rally in Lansing. While the appearance was essentially planned to be a debate between White and Chris Alexander, a representative of the Lansing Coalition against Nazis (LCAN), there was little debate because as the representative of LCAN noted, White cares little for discussing any position and instead just repeats his baseless assertions over and over again while interrupting both Alexander and the host of the program.

Among the worst of these assertions was White’s contention that the Holocaust did not happen and that the documented deaths of six million Jewish people were “fabrications” that originated with the Soviets, an argument that is fairly common among Holocaust deniers. He also said that Adolf Hitler, whose birthday the NSM is celebrating and whom they openly admire, was a “peaceful” man that saved the German people from the Bolshevik threat in the 1930s and that for the most part people other than Jewish people “admire” Hitler. He explained that Michigan was chosen because of the large number of “units” (chapters) that the NSM has in the state and the large amount of growth that the NSM has seen over the past year in the state. Of course, as is always the case with Bill White, the appearance feature a variety of character assassinations and outright lies about activists including the laughable claim that the Lansing activist group Direct Action!, a member of LCAN, has “dozens of people in jail” for bombings and arsons, despite the fact that the information is completely untrue. White and the NSM have consistently misrepresented the fact that Direct Action! was labeled as “domestic terrorists” in an FBI document in 2002 and has used the information to attempt to discredit those planning to protest the NSM. He went on to “reveal” information that the Lansing police are aware of specific plans that members of LCAN want to shoot public officials or members of the NSM at Saturday’s rally and that additional intelligence information states many protestors are brining weapons. None of the information was sourced in a way that listeners could verify it and its veracity seemed dubious at best.

Despite the fact that the NSM does have a clear political program, there was almost no discussion of what Alexander called the NSM’s “serious agenda” and the NSM’s efforts to appeal to youth and working class people in Michigan and the United States through a program of radical change. While some of the NSM’s politics were revealed when White stated that the NSM is in favor of “at least” some form of segregation (he cited a recent vote to separate Omaha’s school district along racial lines as a potential example) and described how he believes that each race has distinct skills and characters. White also stated that the group opposes “illegal immigration” and did not comment when Alexander pointed out that the group supports “deportation” by force if necessary of immigrants. Throughout the interview White would briefly mention that the NSM wants to stand up for “white workers,” but specifics were never offered as to what that meant. Alexander agreed with White’s assertions that working people in Michigan are being hit hard and that this offers a context for the NSM and other neo-Nazi groups to appeal, but completely disagreed with the solution being proposed by the NSM and argued that grassroots organizing, such as that done by LCAN in the community, and the people need to come together as a community both to resist Nazis and address the problems facing working people in Michigan as it is clear that that the state will not do so.

Towards the end of the segment, there was a brief discussion of the ongoing debate over how the NSM’s rally will take place and questions regarding the LCAN protest. White explained that the NSM’s plans remain fluid pending the outcome of an injunction filed yesterday in court to prevent Lansing from erecting a massive fence to separate protestors and the NSM and LCAN, responding to questions about the legality of its planned march. This discussion was continued via subsequent guests, including Lansing Mayor Virgil Berneo and Bishop Maxwell, who discussed the planned “diversity” rally which they encouraged people to attend instead of the protests being planned by LCAN. Mayor Berneo explained that while he personally opposes the Nazis’ views that people need to understand that in a Democracy there has to be a “venue for discourse” among conflicting ideas. He also explained that legally the city cannot restrict the NSM from attending the diversity rally and that the Nazis can attend as long as they are “peaceful.” Similarly, Bishop Maxwell, one of the organizers of the diversity rally, stated that if the Nazis show up at the diversity rally they will be “treated with respect and tolerance”—not for their ideas—but as people. Another guest, Kurt Frank of the Toledo Blade, who covered the NSM’s rally last October in Toledo, explained that he thinks the city’s preparations will prevent a repeat of the October riot in Toledo.

National Socialist Movement (NSM) Advocates for White Society Excluding Jewish, Homosexual, and “Non-White” Peoples

The National Socialist Movement (NSM), otherwise known as America’s Nazi Party, has garnered considerable attention over the past few weeks with its planned rally at the state capital in Lansing on the 22nd. In both corporate media sources and alternative media such as Lansing’s weekly City Pulse and Michigan State University’s student newspaper, there have been a considerable number of articles focusing on the potential for a conflict between the NSM and groups protesting the rally, many of whom have coalesced as the Lansing Coalition against Nazis (LCAN). However, while these articles have discussed security preparations, the efforts of some Lansing city leaders to prevent protests, and the possibility that the NSM will attend the city’s diversity rally, there has been little to no reporting on what exactly the NSM advocates, how active they are, and how they aim to achieve their goal of a white society.

According to various sources, the contemporary National Socialist Movement has its origins with the American Nazi Party which was founded in 1959 by George Lincoln Rockwell, a man who was known as “America’s Fuheur” and who advocated the extermination of all “treasonous Jews, through methods used by Hitler’s Nazis, banish all American Negroes to Africa and amend the Constitution of the United States to conform to Nazi whims” (source). Like the NSM, Rockwell developed an advanced form of Nazism that broadened the definition of “white” beyond the exclusive Ku Klux Klan (KKK) and traditional Nazi definitions to include everyone who was not born black and was not Jewish. Rockwell also advanced the notion of Holocaust denial and worked to connect Nazism with Christianity, laying the foundation for groups such as World Church of the Creator (WCOTC), a white supremacist group that gained influence among white supremacists during the 1990s and was a consistent target of anti-fascist organizing. Rockwell and his neo-Nazi followers also popularized the wearing of Nazi uniforms or “brown shirts” during their public appearances and frequently referred to themselves as “storm troopers” after the Nazi SS.

While the continuity can be seen in both the NSM (nationally and in Michigan) holding “memorial” events for Rockwell and in the NSM’s frequent public appearances wearing full Nazi uniforms, there is also a strong ideological and organizational link to Rockwell. The NSM was founded in 1974 as the National Socialist American Workers Freedom Movement by Robert Brannen and Cliff Harington, two former “stormtroopers” in the American Nazi Party, which had largely disbanded after the assassination of Rockwell in 1967. Until the mid-1990s, the group operated largely in Minnesota’s Twin Cities with little public attention until it received notoriety when two members showed up in Nazi uniform to a Minnesota legislative committee hearing to protest a proposed gay rights bill. In 1994, Herrington stepped down and leadership was given to Jeff Schoep in 1998, who was hailed as the man that would finally achieve the “white revolution” (Schoep has a criminal past as does Indiana’s NSM head who is a registered sex offender). Schoep, who was only 24 at the time that he took “command” of the NSM, has worked to appeal to younger white supremacists and has continued the group’s open adulation of Adolph Hitler and organized the NSM as a paramilitary group wherein members are given military ranks (hence Schoep’s title of “Commander”) and chapters are referred to as “units.”

The NSM’s core ideology is based around what it calls the “25 points of American National Socialism, racial freedom, and separation.” While the NSM claims that they take into consideration other factors aside from race, even a cursory look at their positions reveals that they are extreme racists in the tradition of Hitler. The NSM advocates “the union of all Whites [sic]” into a “greater America” that is based on self-determination and National Socialism where only those of “pure White blood” will be full citizens, whereas all others would live under the threat of forced deportation and be “subject to laws for aliens.” In staying with traditional Nazism, Jewish people and homosexuals would not be permitted to be a member of the nation. The group also advocates family law that is race specific as a means of ensuring the “race survival” of the white race and makes exceptions to its opposition to abortion and euthanasia in the case of “race-mixing.” The military would be reformed to for “the defense of our race and nation” and would exclude non-Americans, criminals, and “sensitivity training.” Along with the traditional racist views of Nazism, the NSM also has adopted the Nazis anti-gay views. The group views homosexuality as “a chosen lifestyle and a mental sickness,” labeling it a “social degeneracy” that must be “expunged” from society. They go on to argue that homosexuality encourages sexual predators, sexual pedophiles, rape, and murder, of which the NSM believes the majority are committed by “homosexual prone monsters” and would deal with such individuals with “an instant death penalty” according to the NSM Michigan’s “Questions and Answers.”

Interestingly, the NSM also advocates a sort of populist right-based anti-capitalist rhetoric as part of its program of implementing “a healthy nationalized socialist economy” that makes appeals to what may be legitimate concerns of much of the working poor. The NSM opposes the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), the World Trade Organization (WTO), and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and advocates for such things as a living wage, universal access to health care, removal of taxes on the necessities of life, affordable access to health care, and even increased regulation of pollution. If all this is presented without the NSM’s racism, homophobia, and xenophobia, it is more radical than either the Democratic or Republican Party platforms. Similarly, the NSM seeks to capitalize on anti-immigrant sentiment and advocates for the immediate deportation of what they term “illegal” immigrants. Of course, all of these programs and policies have to been seen within the context of the NSM’s efforts to protect “white workers” from the perceived threats that they are facing from other groups, and while it can be argued that the majority of people in the United States are opposed to Nazism, the NSM’s appeal for radical change where the right and the left have failed does resonant with the some disenfranchised youth (the NSM has a program specifically targeting youth, the Viking Youth Corps).

While the NSM may potentially appeal to some white citizens of the United States, it is unclear exactly how influential they are and how much popular support they actually have. The NSM claims to have “units” (chapters) in several states—including Michigan—and is estimated to have around 200 members. These units engage in a variety of activities, including leafleting, holding white power musical concerts, rallies, and public demonstrations, as well as efforts aimed at recruiting new members. From the outside it is hard to evaluate exactly how much success the NSM is having in recruiting new members and while many racists are turned off by the group’s Hitleresque dress, the NSM is a potential threat in that it advocates working with other white power groups and seems to have the ability to smooth over some of the infighting that has plagued the white supremacist and fascist movements.

Noise Blockade Call to Action to Oppose Nazis in Lansing

A CALL TO ACTION FOR A NOISE BLOCKADE TO OPPOSE THE NAZIS ON APRIL 22

As Students and citizens of Lansing and beyond we have a responsibility to confront the Nazis who are tainting our community. On April 22nd, the National Socialist Movement, America’s Nazi party, will be holding a rally on the steps of the Lansing capital to commemorate Hitler’s birthday and spread their racist propaganda. Instead, we will be presenting a message of unity and community through a vocal and vibrant noise blockade… we will not let these fascists organize in our own town. We will obstruct their hate with our music, our noise, and our voices.

Our noise blockade will consist of every type of instrument available. We are asking for brass, drums, cymbals, buckets, pots, pans, screaming voices; anything that will create a large volume of sound and add to our united and diverse message.

This noise blockade will assemble on April 22nd at 12:30pm at River View Park on Michigan Ave, and Grand (next to the Radisson hotel).

Updates on Lansing Anti-Nazi Protest

Direct Action!, one of the member groups of the Lansing Coalition Against Nazis (LCAN), has posted further details of the April 22nd anti-nazi protest in Lansing:

On April 22nd 2006 from 2-4pm the National Socialist Movement (NSM) will hold its national rally at the Capital Building in Lansing, MI. The NSM are neo-nazis who call themselves “America’s Nazi Party” and call for the eradication of “inferior” races. A coalition of community organizations, campus groups and community members has come together to form the Lansing Coalition Against Nazis (LCAN) in response to the Nazis attempts to organize and recruit. LCAN is calling for a visible and vocal demonstration to counter the NSM’s message of hate. Please join the march and rally beginning at 12:30pm on Saturday April 22nd, 2006.

The group has posted two flyers (1, 2) and has announced that people will meet at the corner Grand and Michigan at Riverview Park in downtown Lansing at 12:30pm. The protest has drawn considerable national attention, despite the fact that the city has actively discouraged people from attending the rally and police are asking downtown businesses to close as part of a security strategy that will include a 3,000 foot chain link fence and a system of protest zones and metal detectors designed to prevent “violence” between protestors and the NSM.
