MSU-YAF Connected White Supremacist Organizing Tours for Racist Speakers

The Spartan Edge, an online news source covering Michigan State University and the surrounding area, has published a new article titled “Three States of Hate: MSU-YAF Part of Skinhead’s Campus Speech Operations” that further explores the ties of MSU’s Young Americans for Freedom to a white supremacist skinhead named Preston Wiginton who has organized campus speaking tours for white supremacists. Among the people Wiginton has worked with are Nick Griffin, a member of the fascist British National Party who spoke at MSU last fall and Jared Taylor who is scheduled to speak at MSU in March. While Taylor says his speech was not organized by Wiginton, the Spartan Edge article provides an overview of Wiginton’s efforts organizing speaking tours for racists:

“The Nick Griffin speech at MSU was not the first college event arranged by Wiginton. As far back as 2005 Wiginton was going to campus to promote his white nationalist views against non-white immigration.

Wiginton took part in arranging a speaking tour for author Frosty Wooldridge, an anti-immigration author and activist.

By 2007 Wiginton had enrolled at Texas A&M and begun a campaign to push his white nationalist views. Wiginton posted on Stormfront about his challenge to Dr. Tito Guerrero, Associate Provost of Diversity at Texas A&M, to debate Jared Taylor.

Preston Wiginton’s next campus speech came on April 9, 2007. Wiginton, working with the Clemson Conservatives, hosted Jared Taylor, the editor of the white nationalist Web site American Renaissance.

Taylor spoke about multiculturalism as a weakness to the country and claimed that racial segregation was a natural state of being.

Preston Wiginton wrote in the online comment section of the Clemson newspaper, The Daily Tiger, praising the way the students at Clemson handled the event.

He also posted on the white supremacist Web site Stormfront (under the name ruskybound) calling for donations to support more speeches by Jared Taylor for fall 2007.”

The article also briefly explores why Wiginton and white supremacists are targeting universities:

“Wiginton’s work setting up speakers at universities has come to the attention of civil rights groups such as the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Anti-Defamation League.

Carrie Waggoner, assistant director of the Michigan Region for the Anti-Defamation League, said that Wiginton was likely trying to draw attention to his ideas by hosting events on campus.

“He is likely trying to draw attention to and support for his point of view on immigration and white nationalism,” Waggoner said. “Ideas like Holocaust denial and white nationalism/white supremacy are not generally accepted by academia but may be discussed as concepts in a classroom setting.”

Protests Planned Against American Renaissance Conference

021408-jared_taylor.jpg

This weekend in Washington DC, activists are planning to hold a protest against “the American Renaissance Conference 2008.” The conference is organized by the prominent racist Jared Taylor–who is scheduled to speak in Michigan at Michigan State University in March. The conferences, which have been happening since the 1990s, often function as a sort of “who’s who” of the racist movement, attracting representatives and activists from across the racist right. In 2006, David Duke attended, in 1998 it attracted a variety of racists in what the Journal of Blacks in Higher Education termed “A Convocation of Bigots,” and it was more of the same in 2000 and 2002), and 2006. The conferences frequently draw protests, who like the organizers of this year’s protest cite American Renaissance’s white supremacy as a reason to disrupt the conferences:

“The AmRen conference organizers call for a white supremacist society and political order. American Renaissance (AmRen) editor Jared Taylor states: “If whites permit themselves to be displaced, it is not just the high culture of the West that could disappear but such things as representative government, rule of law and freedom of speech, which whites usually get right and everyone else usually gets wrong.” Among past and present participants in this gathering are Klan member David Duke, Don Black, the operator of the white supremacist website Stormfront.org, former NY state prosecutor Michael Regan and Nick Griffin of the neo-fascist British National Party.

American Renaissance is a monthly magazine promoting an agenda of white supremacy through eugenics, faux science, and what they call “race realism.” In attempts to appeal to the middle and educated classes of white America, AmRen seeks to establish scientific “truths” such as eugenics by creating non-existent links between race and IQ, and by creating even more non- existent links between race and the predisposition to “negative social behaviors”. AmRen advances the racist beliefs of “Racial differences in IQ”, the “costs of diversity,” and the “challenges of non-white immigration.” One quick glance at their website reveals articles with titles like: “A Defense of White Racial Consciousness”; “The Biological Realities of Race”; “Multiculturalism and the War Against White America”; and “The Color of Crime.”"

Aside from the protests against the conference offering an example of how activists in Michigan may want to meet Taylor’s March appearance at Michigan State University, looking at the American Renaissance conference allows us to further sharpen our understanding of Taylor’s racism.

This year’s conference has the theme “In the Name of Our People,” which of course means white people exclusively. According to the conference website, the conference will explore how “whites are afraid to speak out in their own interests” despite white “civilization” being threatened by “racial differences in IQ, the costs of ‘diversity,’ the challenges of non-white immigration.” Like its newsletter which relies heavily on statistics and faux-academic arguments, the conference has a line-up of speakers offering what appear to be academic talks on “The Heritability of World IQ Differences,” “Why is There so Much Resistance to Race Realism,” and “Understanding the African Mind.” Of course, the conference program leaves out the fact that many of the speakers are well-known racists that both promote abhorrent views and actively organize in a variety of groups. A sampling of the speakers includes:

* J. Phillippe Rushton is a professor at the University of Western Ontario, Canada who does research attempting to prove there are differences in intelligence between races. Rushton has received extensive support from the Pioneer Fund, an organization that has for years funded research aimed at proving differences between races. Rushton now chairs the Pioneer Fund.

* Sam G. Dickson is a member of the racist Council of Conservative Citizens and is on the board of the Charles Martel Society a racist group similar to American Renaissance.

* Bruno Gollnisch is a leader in the French National Front political party of Jean-Marie Le Pen. Gollnisch has questioned the Holocaust, stating, “I do not question the existence of concentration camps but historians could discuss the number of deaths. As to the existence of gas chambers, it is up to historians to speak their minds.”

* Ashley Mote is a British politician who in 2007 joined a neo-fascist political grouping in the European parliament called Identity, Tradition, and Sovereignty. The group was criticized for being “xenophobic, anti-semetic, and racist” before falling apart in late 2007 for

* Michael Walker is a British writer who is part of the so-called “European New Right” is the editor of The Scorpion, a white nationalist newsletter. At the 1998 American Renaissance conference, he praised the French National Front leader Jean-Marie Le Pen.

YAF Speaker Scrutinized

Last month, Media Mouse reported that Michigan State University’s (MSU) chapter of Young Americans for Freedom (YAF) is bringing Walid Shoebat to speak at the college in March. Recently, Talk to Action published an article titled “Autobiographical Accounts of USAF-paid ’3 ex-Terrorists’ Challenged” that further scrutinizes Shoebat:

“Walid Shoebat and his “former terrorists”, converts to fundamentalist Christian zionism Christianity (apocalyptic premillenniallist dispensational Christianity to be exact) have been traveling around the US, around for several years now, beating the drumbeat for a full-blown religious war between the United States and the entire Islamic world. Shoebat and his associates claim that, because of their alleged background as former terrorists in the PLO, Hamas, or Hezbollah, they knew what Islam is really about: killing Christian and Jews. Along with a large cohort of Christian Zionists and other speakers and publicists, NeoConservatives and Israelis tied to the Likud Party, Walid Shoebat has been part of an ongoing PR campaign seemingly bent on to whipping Americans into a frenzied panic about the alleged menace of militant Islam.”

022008-three_ex_terrorists.jpg

According to the article, Shoebat and his two “ex-terrorists” have received increased scrutiny after being invited as paid experts on terrorism at a United States Air Force Academy. Along with this, there has been new criticism of Shoebat’s background:

“Now, a woman who says she has tracked down and talked to one of Walid Shoebat’s Palestinian-American relatives–who supposedly has said Walid Shoebat’s story is fraudulent–has now called Shoebat out to the extent of refusing to retract her story, which contradicts Shoebat’s story of having been a major PLO terrorist, despite a lawsuit threat from Shoebat’s agent.

As reported by Eileen Fleming, on her blog, a relative of Shoebat’s told Fleming that:

“The biggest act of ‘terror’ he ever committed was to glue Palestinian flags on street posts. But, when he was in jail he met someone who invited him to join a group against Israel. In 1977 Walid and his friends put packages behind a bank, but there were no explosives in it. That year he also met some Jehovah Witnesses and joined them for a while.”

As Fleming’s account, of this alternative and somewhat drab alternate chronicle of Shoebat’s past, continues it descends to a sad, tawdry level:

“Walid came to the U.S. in 1978 and met an Afghani friend and they went into business together, but it didn’t work out, so he moved to Chicago in 1981 where many cousins live and asked for help. He went to Loop College [now Harold Washington College] and was appointed as a foreign student advisor; a position offered him so he could pay his tuition.”

“The repo man took Walid’s truck and after that he went back to California. He met a Palestinian girl there and they got married and had a son. But, he beat his wife and that marriage broke up.”

It is also worth noting that Kamal Saleem–one of the “three ex-terrorists”–spoke at Calvin College in Grand Rapids last fall. Since that time, he has been examined by Doug Howard, a history professor at Calvin College. Howard said that he suspects that Saleem–an associate of Shoebat–is a fraud and advised the college against hosting him.

Student Group Hosting Anti-Islam Speaker

011708-walid_shoebat.jpg

Last month, Media Mouse profiled Jared Taylor, a prominent racist who will be speaking at Michigan State University (MSU) in March. Taylor is being brought to Michigan State by the MSU chapter of Young Americans for Freedom (MSU-YAF), a group that has been labeled a “hate group” by the Southern Poverty Law Center due to its racism.

While the announcement that Taylor will be speaking at MSU has drawn attention from a variety of sources, another speaker announcement made at the same time has received little scrutiny. Last month, MSU-YAF announced that it will be bringing Walid Shoebat to the school:

“On Tuesday, March 25, from 7 to 9 p.m., Walid Shoebat will give a presentation that will deal with how radical Islam poses as a threat to humanity. Shoebat is a former member of the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO), a terrorist organization. He is the president and founder of the Walid Shoebat Foundation, an organization that seeks to combat anti-Semitism and promotes peace in the Middle East.”

Shoebat is a self-described former “PLO terrorist” who has a history of making anti-Islam and anti-Semitic statements. Shoebat has claimed that he committed terrorist acts against the state of Israel before moving to the United States in 1978 where he claims he financially supported the PLO until converting to Christianity in 1993. Since that time, Shoebat has toured the country delivering speeches highly critical of–and often insulting–Islam. Shoebat has claimed that “Our fight is against the spiritual forces of Islam” and that “the enemy” is Islam.

Shoebat’s anti-Islam rhetoric has gained the support of Christian Zionists and Zionists who have booked Shoebat to speak at locations around the United States. Shoebat–with his claims of being a former “Palestinian terrorist”–helps give the perception of “authority” to anti-Palestinian arguments. Using his background, Shoebat claims that he knows that Palestinians are inclined towards terrorism and want to kill Jewish people. Similarly, his claims about Palestinian “terrorism” make Palestinian resistance to the occupation seem illegitimate.

He has appeared extensively in the media, especially since 9/11. Despite all of his media appearances, he has received little scrutiny–either in the media or from his supporters. In one of the few articles critical of Shoebat, Will Youmans writes that:

“Walid Shoebat, from Beit Sahour, in the West Bank, is paraded by pro-Israeli organizations on speaking tours, in articles, and radio and TV interviews. An article in Jewish Week announces the secret of his magic: “a former terrorist repents and discusses his metamorphosis on six-city speaking tour.” Articles on BBC’s website, as well as pro-Israeli organs such as WorldNetDaily and FrontPageMag depict Shoebat on his own terms, as an ex-terrorist now fully supportive of Israel. In Arlene Pecks’ words, he went “from terrorist to zionist.”

To move on to another point, there is an underlying irony in Walid Shoebat’s new found popularity. This celebrated political convert adopted a form of religious fanaticism known for its historical Anti-Semitism. A review of his website, reveals the roots of his views. His ultimate expectation is that Jewish control of Israel-Palestine is essential for Armageddon. Then, rapture will come. The Messiah will destroy the enemies of Israel, but the “many countries who confess Jesus as their saviour will be amongst God’s people, called as his people, and will all personally know the Lord Jesus Christ.” In short, the Jews will be forced to accept Christ or perish in hell a deeply and traditionally Anti-Semitic view.

Pro-Israeli groups are relying on a speaker who, first, is motivated by a fundamental Anti-Semitism and, second, has actually perpetrated malicious acts of violence against Jews. These also happen to be the two most significant charges they levy against critics of Israel. With the latter, they very rarely find an outspoken critic of Israel in the US who actually committed any violence themselves, rather they lower the charges to rhetorically supporting terrorism, or in the case of Sami Al-Arian, financing it.”

Shoebat–who claims to have directly attacked and provided support to Palestinian “terrorist” organizations–has never been targeted for prosecution or deportation.

This all fits in well with the work of MSU-YAF, which has aggressively attacked Islam. Last year, the group brought Nick Griffin, a British racist who promotes hatred towards Muslims. Moreover, the website YAF Watch has documented MSU-YAF’s pattern of anti-Islam activity.

In August of 2007, YAF had this to say about Islam:

“Islam is a cult in which the followers worship a pedophile name Mohammad who had an intimate relationship with a six-year-old girl named Aisha. He spreads his “faith” by attacking villages and giving the inhabitants of those towns two options: join Islam or die. He also enslaved people.

Next time you see a Muslim, tell them that they are heretics to the one true faith.”

YAF’s chairman, Kyle Bristow, also has said:

“What part of Islam do you like most Philip? The part where they behead people? The anti-semitism? how they treat women as subhuman? How they execute women who are rape victims?

If Bush wasn’t a liberal, he would have nuked Mecca on 9/11. I would have.

Islam is a threat to the world. It is spreading faster than AIDS does through the homosexual population.

If you like Islam so much, you should join the Peace Corps and live with them in a cave for a few months.”

The group also organized a Koran desecration contest by encouraging people to order a free Koran to desecrate and asking that they send pictures to the group.

Student Group Hosting Racist Speaker at MSU

The Michigan State University (MSU) chapter of Young Americans for Freedom (YAF) has announced that it will be hosting a lecture by Jared Taylor in March. Taylor, who is not particularly well-known in the mainstream, is a prominent racist who’s New Century Foundation and American Renaissance publication are devoted to pursuing “scientific” justifications for racism.

If Jared Taylor’s speech happens as planned on March 19, 2008, it will be at least the second time that Taylor has spoken in Michigan. In August, Taylor spoke at a meeting organized by the Michigan chapter of the racist Council of Conservative Citizens. It is also the second time in recent months that MSU-YAF has booked an overtly racist speaker. In October, the group hosted British racist and fascist Nick Griffin whose speech was attended by at least three racist activists. In the past, MSU-YAF has brought speakers who hold what can ultimately be considered racist views–such as Chris Simcox of the Minutemen and Congressman Tom Tancredo–but it is only recently that they have begun to bring speakers that are overtly racist.

While Jared Taylor, and to a lesser extent Nick Griffin, can attempt-however unsuccessfully-to mask their racism by using academic language or casting themselves as “racialists” or “separatists,” MSU-YAF is no doubt aware of their views and the fact that they are racists. Instead of admitting this, in their description of the event YAF emphasizes that Taylor will speak on “multiculturalism” and how it “poses as a threat to Western civilization.” Like the racism of the Council of Conservative Citizens and other racist groups that attempt to work within the “mainstream,” these are just code words aimed at masking their racism.

While Taylor regularly attacks “multiculturalism” and espouses racist beliefs, he has shunned the more crass forms of white supremacy. He has rejected Nazism and anti-Semitism, arguing that there is room for Jewish people in the white nationalist movement. Despite this, Taylor has not shied away from associating with a broad cross-section of the racist movement. According to the Anti-Defamation League, Taylor’s writing was published in 1992 in a journal associated with the British National Party and has also been published by the Holocaust denial Journal of Historical Review. He also spoke at the 1995 conference of the Populist Party (which ran David Duke as its presidential candidate in 1988) along with Holocaust deniers and neo-Nazis. The founder of the racist Stormfront online community Don Black has also reportedly visited Taylor’s home.

Taylor’s New Century Foundation was founded in 1994 “to study immigration and race relations so as to better understand the consequences of America’s increasing diversity.” It funds the publications of books and hosts an annual conference that has been attended by members of racist groups including the Council of Conservative Citizens and the National Alliance. It is also the principle force behind the American Renaissance a monthly newspaper and website maintained by Taylor. American Renaissance summarizes its beliefs:

“Race is an important aspect of individual and group identity. Of all the fault lines that divide society-language, religion, class, ideology-it is the most prominent and divisive. Race and racial conflict are at the heart of the most serious challenges the Western World faces in the 21st century.

The problems of race cannot be solved without adequate understanding. Attempts to gloss over the significance of race or even to deny its reality only make problems worse. Progress requires the study of all aspects of race, whether historical, cultural, or biological.”

In practical terms, this has meant white supremacy, albeit of a more “sophisticated” variety than that practiced by the Ku Klux Klan or neo-Nazi groups. American Renaissance uses “facts” and so-called “scientific studies” to come to its racist conclusions, avoiding the more crass racial stereotypes founded elsewhere in the racist movement. In this way, Taylor’s racism appears more “credible,” although anyone giving more than a cursory thought to its publications can spot the undeniable racism. At any given time, their website features a number of articles reprinted–and often selectively excerpted–to allegedly prove that people of color have higher instances of crime and disease and that people should therefore be separated by race. For example, today there were reprinted articles asserting that Whites are better at surviving cancer than other races, that immigrants are ruining the Midwest, and that black students are suspended at a far greater rate than white students (thereby “supporting” the idea that blacks are inherently criminal). The website features-written by Taylor himself-denunciations of the “barbaric behavior” of New Orleans’ black population after Hurricane Katrina and culminating in the assertion that “When blacks are left entirely to their own devices, Western Civilization-any kind of civilization-disappears,” that Rosa Parks was an inconsequential figure and that “the adulation of Rosa Parks is just another chapter in the lemming-like rush to destruction whites everywhere appear to have joined,” and that the Jena 6 case is a “fraud.”

There are also “Reports” that claim to be impartial statistical evaluations of crime amongst populations of color. This includes a report titled “Hispanics: A Statistical Portrait” that claims that “Hispanics” are poorer than whites, commit more crimes, are less intelligent, and lack allegiance to the United States. The report cites a number of sources, including government sources, Wikipedia, and the far right anti-immigration group FAIR. The site also makes available for free “The Color of Crime: Race, Crime, and Justice” a report that concludes African-Americans are more likely to commit crimes than whites. While the report asserts that it “takes no position on causes of group differences in crime rates,” it asserts, “the ones that are most commonly proposed-poverty, unemployment, lack of education-are not satisfactory.” It gives little proof for this and completely ignores the existence of racism and institutional racism in the United States. The anti-racists One People’s Project criticizes Taylor for “selection bias,” arguing that he focused only on race. Also for sale are various other publications, including Taylor’s Paved with Good Intentions: The Failure of Race Relations in Contemporary America which according to the Southern Poverty Law Center endorsing a biological conception of race and racial hierarchy. It has published authors active in the white supremacist movement, often those who are active in its more “mainstream” or “academic” wings. For example, American Renaissance has published items by Arthur Jensen, Michael Levin, and Philippe Rushton–all of whom have received funding from the racist Pioneer Fund. Residents of Michigan might be particularly interested in American Renaissance’s coverage of a few issues pertaining to Michigan, notably Proposal 2. In its January 2007 issue, American Renaissance supported eliminating affirmative action in Michigan but criticized the failure of whites to take their “survival” into “their own hands” by letting the movement be led by the African-American Ward Connerly. In 1991, American Renaissance ran a feature on Detroit declaring that “black rule has not been a success” for the city and blaming Detroit’s problems entirely on the percentage of African-Americans living in the city.

American Renaissance is a project of a registered non-profit organization headed by Jared Taylor called the New Century Foundation. In its IRS filing, the New Century Foundation’s trustees were listed as Samuel Francis (a now deceased former editor of the Council of Conservative Citizens’ newspaper), George Resch, Wayne Lutton of Petoskey, Michigan (runs The Social Contract Press a racist publishing house and is associated with the Council of Conservative Citizens), and C. Hubert Kennedy. Taylor’s New Century Foundation has $502,045 in assets according to its 2006. In that same filing, it says it spent $42,905 on a “newsletter read by approximately 6,000 people” along with the sale of educational books and tapes to 2,000 people, spent $40,000 on its website “visited by at least 100,000″ people each month, and spent $17,260 on its conference attended by 300 people. Additionally, it awarded a $5,000 grant to the Charles Martel Society for the publication of Race and the American Prospect by Samuel Francis, a former trustee of the Foundation and associate of the Council of Conservative Citizens. In 2005, its form said, “all recipients of grants must be personally known to the president and trustees of the New Century Foundation.”

Jared Taylor is on the board of the Charles Martel Society, along with others who are involved in the racist right including Sam G. Dickson (a member of the Council of Conservative Citizens), the Petoskey, Michigan-based Wayne Lutton who is involved with the Social Contract Press and the Council of Conservative Citizens, George McDaniel, and Kevin Lamb. The Charles Martel Society’s primary project is publishing The Occidental Quarterly; a journal that has published articles defending eugenics and devoted to the idea that “race informs culture.” Like American Renaissance, it attempts to articulate a scientific argument in support of racism. Its editorial board includes the Council of Conservative Citizens, the anti-Semitic author member of the Council of Conservative Citizens and advisor to the American Immigration Control Foundation.

In 2005, the Charles Martel Society gave $389,944 to the National Policy Institute of Augusta, Georgia, which is a prominent “academic” racist group according to the Southern Poverty Law Center. In the past, its board has overlapped with the Charles Martel Society and its board has included Jared Taylor according to a 2005 IRS filing. Taylor is also listed on the National Policy Institute’s website as a member of its board of directors. The National Policy Institute “promotes the American majority’s unique historical, cultural, and biological inheritance-and advances policies that, without prejudicing the legitimate rights of others, fearlessly defends our rights… our heritage” according to its website. The Institute has several publications available for download which attack affirmative action as giving “preference” to “under qualified” African-Americans over whites, advocating deportation of undocumented immigrants who are taking jobs from U.S. citizens, highlighting the “racial” differences in how African-Americans and White Americans responded to Hurricane Katrina (African-American behavior is made out to be barbaric, complete with a reference to the racist novel Camp of the Saints), and arguing that “White America” (and by extension “America”) has been under steady attack since the civil rights movement.

When Taylor comes to Lansing in March, there will no doubt be some–particularly from MSU-YAF–who will defend him and say that he is not a racist. However, his record and work is clear-Taylor is a part of the racist movement.

SPLC Publishes Article on MSU-YAF

The new issue of the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Intelligence Report magazine features a lengthy article about Michigan State University (MSU)’s chapter of Young Americans for Freedom (YAF). The MSU chapter of YAF is the only campus group in the country to be designated a hate group by the SPLC.

For the most part, the article titled “Black Hats on Campus: Student Hate Group Roils Michigan State,” covers a lot of ground that has been covered elsewhere–Young Americans for Freedom’s anti-gay rhetoric, racist comments from its leader Kyle Bristow, and its connections to neo-Nazis. However, it does offer some new insights, including a quote from Michigan Republican Party chair Saul Anuzis who said “This [Bristow] is exactly the type of young kid we want out there… I’ve known Kyle for years and I can tell you I have never heard him say a racist or bigoted or sexist thing, ever.” It also reports that the Leadership Institute–a rightwing organization that has trained countless conservative activists–where Bristow interned over the summer, is supported by prominent Michigan Republican Richard DeVos. This is a connection that Media Mouse had neglected, and indeed the Richard and Helen DeVos Foundation has gave the Leadership Institute $30,000 from 2002-2004.

Michigan “Stormfront” Members Attended Nick Griffin Speech at MSU

In advance of a speech at Michigan State University (MSU) by British National Party (BNP) member Nick Griffin, there was some discussion about how Griffin’s speech was being promoted on various websites associated with the racist right, including those of American Renaissance and the Council of Conservative Citizens. In addition, the event was promoted on Stormfront, a prominent racist message board used by the racist right and its sympathizers.

The discussion of Stormfront was largely used to bring further pressure on MSU’s chapter of Young Americans for Freedom (YAF), with an example being postings on a blog tracking Young Americans for Freedom called YAF Watch. Following the speech, there was a little discussion on both YAF Watch and Media Mouse about Griffin’s associate Preston Wiginton who is a contributor to Stormfront.

However, Media Mouse has learned that in addition to Wiginton, at least three Stormfront members from Michigan were in attendance at Griffin’s speech. Three individuals came from the east side of the state and boasted of eating dinner with Griffin and other Stormfront members in the following post by an individual using the name “Tactical Mastery” (his profile image contains a swastika):

Looking through video footage from the event and postings by “Tactical Mastery”, it is clear that the user was present:

The user known as “Tactical Mastery” has postings similar to what can typically be found on Stormfront, including complaints about African-Americans in the media:

Racist statements towards African-Americans living in his metro Detroit region:

Weighing in on important controversies like dating people that are not white:

and even expressing concerns over his own “whiteness:”

“Tactical Mastery” said that he attended with other Stormfront members, including those going by the names “David Starr Jordan” and “Ypsilanti NA”. Looking through posts, we were able to find conformation that “David Starr Jordan” was there, as shown in the following screen grab from the event and post from Stormfront:

Earlier discussion of Stormfront members attending the Griffin lecture has previously been used primarily to discount MSU’s Young Americans for Freedom chapter, rather than as a vehicle for discussing how YAF and Nick Griffin fit into a larger rightwing context. The presence of these individuals should not be used simply to discount YAF, but rather to show that Nick Griffin is firmly rooted in the racist right and that his speech would be of interest primarily to racists.

On Stormfront, a common topic of discussion is how many posters are not willing to be “active” in the racist movement, instead spending most of their time on the Internet rather than doing organizing or educational work. The Stormfront members who were present at the Griffin event are active participants in the racist right. In the picture above, “David Starr Jordan” and “Tactical Mastery” were shown preparing leaflets for distribution on Eastern Michigan University’s campus. The leaflets came from a group called “The Nationalist Coalition” a so-called “white activist organization” that calls for a “White living space… completely free of non-Whites” as one of its “goals.” The leaflets were distributed as part of an event organized by Stormfront members called “Night of the Flyer” in which members were encouraged to distribute “pro-White” material in their communities. In addition to Ypsilanti, flyers were also distributed in Muskegon by another Stormfront member.

Aside from the leafleting at Eastern Michigan University, it is worth noting that “David Starr Jordan”–who’s name appears to be “Evan Thomas” based on several posts and articles attributed to him on Stormfront–is an active member of the organized racist movement at the national level. This year, Thomas spoke at a gathering of white supremacists in New York, where he was described as one of the “up-and-coming leaders of a new wave of white supremacy” by the Village Voice.

Indeed, Thomas has a long history of involved in the racist movement and has organized several events in Michigan. He was involved with the European American Association, a group that has brought Canadian racist Paul Fromm and John de Nugent (who has been affiliated with the Holocaust denial organization known as The Institute for Historical Review) to Michigan. Moreover, Thomas has been involved in a number of racist groups including the European American Unity and Rights Organization, the National Alliance, the League of the South, the National Vanguard news website, and his own Soldiers of the Confederacy discussion board:

In addition, through his organizing in Michigan and involvement in organized racism, Thomas has connections with prominent racists, including David Duke and his self-proclaimed “friend and mentor” John de Nugent:

On Stormfront, Thomas has written fairly extensively and while a considerably more detailed post would be needed to fully explore his ideology, the following posts show that he is a “white nationalist” and a possible Holocaust denier:

Finally, another member identified as attending the event with Thomas and “Tactical Mastery” was “Ypsilanti NA”. That poster also has been involved with organized racism and has been active with the National Alliance and attended a recent meeting organized by the Council of Conservative Citizens that featured prominent racists Jared Taylor and J. Philippe Rushton:

By inviting Griffin to campus, these are exactly the type of people that Young Americans for Freedom (YAF) could have expected to attract. Griffin–more than any of YAF’s other speakers–has direct ties to the organized racist movement. It seems impossible that YAF could have been unaware of Griffin’s racism (even if they did perceive them to be “allegations” rather than specific examples) and now it is clear that their event brought not only a racist to speak, but members of the organized racist movement to Michigan State University’s campus.

Racist Speaker Disrupted at Michigan State University

photo of nick griffin

A speech by the British National Party’s (BNP) Nick Griffin, a well-known racist who’s BNP calls for “…an immediate halt to all further immigration, the immediate deportation of criminal and illegal immigrants, and the introduction of a system of voluntary resettlement whereby those immigrants who are legally here…” was effectively disrupted by anti-racist protestor at Michigan State University. Shortly into the Griffin’s talk, which was sponsored by MSU’s chapter of Young Americans for Freedom, Griffin abandoned his planned speech after being repeatedly overshadowed by protestors calling him a racist and citing his involvement in the racist right.

During his speech, which was billed as an expose on how “multiculturalism, mass immigration, and Islam are destroying Western civilization,” Griffin made several statements reflecting his racism, homophobia, and hatred of Muslims. Griffin stayed true to how his talk was billed, stating, “We don’t believe in integration. Integration is extermination.” Early on, Griffin told the audience that he would “shove homosexuals into the closet” and while later telling an audience Muslim member of the audience that he sees her as a threat. Griffin said that he does believe the Holocaust happened, downplaying his previous statements denying the Holocaust by stating that “…in the past I have said very rude things about the Holocaust which doesn’t make me an anti-Semite” and later stating “I have no doubt whatsoever–I have never doubted–that vast numbers of entirely innocent Eastern European Jews were murdered by the Nazis and their allies.” Of course, this statement contradicts Griffin’s previous claims, but it does reflect the way in which the BNP has sought to gloss over its most extreme positions in order to appeal to reactionary tendencies within Britain. It is also important to remember that despite what Griffin says publicly, in 1998 he was convicted of distributing materially likely to insight racial hatred and that he has a long history of involvement in organized racism and fascism.

Throughout his talk, Griffin was flanked by Preston Wiginton, a man who has been associated with the racist right via his involvement with the white supremacist Stormfront online community. When confronted about his involvement with Stormfront, Wiginton denied being a Nazi, stating “I have not been to Stormfront in a year” and claiming that he is “just a person who loves my people.” While fairly immaterial, a simple search on Stormfront turns up posts from Preston Wiginton authored in July of 2007. Like Griffin–who has spoken at a conference organized by the racist American Renaissance group–Wiginton has been associated with other white supremacists, including David Duke. Wiginton also runs a website called “Noaztlan.org” on which he declares that “Illegal Immigration Spells Cancer for the American Way of Life.” Wiginton appears to have booked Griffin’s current speaking tour and in the past ran a website defending Griffin’s BNP.

Young Americans for Freedom appeared to have few members in attendance and few people came to listen to the talk. The overwhelming majority who were there were opposed to Griffin’s lecture. Prior to the start of the speech, there was a march across MSU’s campus that ended with a “community speak out” in which representatives of a variety of campus and community organizations opposed both Griffin’s message and YAF’s continued hosting of racists.

Racist Speaker at MSU to be met by Protests

Tonight, Michigan State University’s (MSU) chapter of Young Americans for Freedom (YAF) is hosting British National Party (BNP) member Nick Griffin. Nick Griffin and the BNP have a long history of racism, homophobia, holocaust denial, and anti-Muslim hatred. Young Americans for Freedom–who has been designated a “hate group” by the Southern Poverty Law Center–stated in its press release for the event that Griffin will speak about how “multiculturalism, mass immigration, and Islam are destroying Western civilization” and how Europe is becoming “Eurabia.” Perhaps not surprisingly given Griffin’s involvement in the larger racist right, racist groups with a presence in Michigan including American Renaissance and the Council of Conservative Citizens have promoted the discussion on their websites, as has the racist online message board Stormfront.

While Young Americans for Freedom has brought speakers to MSU before who have connections to the racist right, none of the speakers have been as closely involved with the broader racist right as Griffin. A protest has been planned to greet Griffin:

Community Speak Out Against Racism and Injustice!

Friday, October 26th

Meet at the Rock – 6pm

(Michigan State University Campus on Farm Lane across from Bessey Hall)

March to Veterinary Medical Center

(Griffin will speak in E100 Vet Med Center)

Community Speak Out – 7pm

In front of the Vet Med Center

Nick Griffin, holocaust denier and leader of the fascist British National Party (BNP) will be speaking on campus to promote a racist agenda and divide our university and community.

THE POLITICS OF THE BNP ARE PART OF AN INTERNATIONAL TREND OF RACISM AFFECTING BOTH AMERICA AND EUROPE

We reject this xenophobic speaker and feel the need to speak out against him. Join us!”

Moreover, Michigan Against White Supremacy has prepared extensive background material on Griffin and the BNP. It is reprinted below:

Nick Griffin is a white supremacist, a holocaust denier, is homophobic and is an all around racist. These images are just a taste of the hate that he and the British National Party (BNP) represent.

Griffin has stated that Islam is a “wicked, vicious faith” and that Muslims were turning Britain into a “multi-racial hell hole” (1).

Griffin has called the Holocaust the “Holo-Hoax” and wrote that, ‘I am well aware that orthodox opinion is that 6m Jews were gassed and cremated or turned into soup and lampshades… I have reached the conclusion that the “extermination tale is a mixture of Allied wartime propaganda, extremely profitable lie, and latter witch-hysteria’ (2).

Griffin on Islam

In a speech, British National Party leader Nick Griffin made in the Reservoir Tavern in Keighley, West Yorkshire, on 19 January 2004, in which he described Islam as a “wicked, vicious faith” and said Muslims were turning Britain into a “multi-racial hell hole”. (3)

Another Griffin speech turned to allegations of violence by Asian Muslims against whites. He said: “These 18, 19, and 25-year-old Asian Muslims who are seducing and raping white girls in this town right now are not particularly good Muslims, they drink and all the rest of it, but still part of what they are doing comes from what they are taught is acceptable.”

Griffin said Asian community leaders would condemn the attacks to the press, but not to the attackers themselves. “It’s part of their plan for conquering countries. It’s how they do it,” he said. He added that this would expand to cover the UK “as the last whites try and find their way to the sea”. (4)

In interviews, he has refused to say sorry for comments on Islam and said the “Islamification” of the West had partly happened by rape. (5)

Griffin’s Anti-Semitism and Holocaust Denial

In 1995, Griffin joined the BNP. He began to edit The Rune, an anti-Semitic quarterly. He also announced that the BNP should prioritize denying the Holocaust to schoolchildren.

He earned a two-year suspended prison sentence for his sick views on the Holocaust. In 1998 he was found guilty of inciting race hatred at Harrow Crown Court for denying that the Holocaust ever took place. (6)

He wrote in the Rune: ‘I am well aware that orthodox opinion is that 6m Jews were gassed and cremated or turned into soup and lampshades… I have reached the conclusion that the “extermination” tale is a mixture of Allied wartime propaganda, extremely profitable lie, and latter witch-hysteria.’

He insists the number of deaths at Auschwitz has been inflated, and is emphatic that no more than 3.5m Jews had perished under Nazi rule. (7)

A Griffin publication, “Who are the Mindbenders?”, claims to prove that the minds of British people are brainwashed through Jewish control of the media. The booklet includes a list of all known Jews working in the media as though they are working together for a joint cause. He proves Jewish control of the BBC by naming a mere 19 Jews who work for the corporation.

In 1996, Griffin launched a vicious attack on the Holocaust denier David Irving for admitting that some people might have died in the Holocaust. “True Revisionists will not be fooled by this new twist to the sorry tale of the Hoax of the Twentieth Century,” Griffin wrote. (8)

Griffin remains an ardent Holocaust denier. Even today, he still refuses to accept the Holocaust happened. In 2006 he was quoted in the Mail on Sunday as saying: “It’s well known that the chimneys from the gas chambers at Auschwitz are fake, built after the war ended.” (9)

Griffin’s Homophobia

If Griffin’s reform is not a ruse then it certainly has limits to its tolerance. In response to the protests following the Soho bomb planted by former BNP member David Copeland, Griffin wrote: ‘The footage of dozens of “gay” demonstrators flaunting their perversion in front of the world’s journalists showed just why so many ordinary people find these creatures so repulsive.’ (10)

Griffin’s Racism

According to the BNP 2001 general election manifesto, “native Britons”, whom it claims can only be whites, would be given priority in the job market. “Non-whites” would instantly become second-class citizens in Britain. Any black person who commits a crime would also be thrown out of the country, even those who were born here. Mixed-race relationships would be outlawed. Privately, the BNP leaders have continually reasserted their political views. “all black people will be repatriated, even if they were born here,” BNP leader Nick Griffin told Wales on Sunday in 1996. “We must preserve the white race, because it has been responsible for all the good things in civilisation.” (11)

Affiliated with Neo-Nazis

The BNP has a long relationship with William Pierce, leader of the National Alliance, one of the most hardline Nazi groups in the USA. In August 1999, Pierce addressed an American Friends of the BNP (AFBNP) meeting in Arlington, Virginia. Pierce’s articles have regularly appeared in Spearhead, and in 1995 he addressed a BNP rally in London.

The website of the American Friends of the BNP has links to openly Nazi and

anti-Semitic groups.

BNP members are heavily involved in the violent Nazi skinhead music scene, Blood and Honour. In 1998, Blood and Honour hosted a fundraising concert for the BNP European Election campaign in Coventry. Among the audience were Nick Griffin (BNP Chairman) and Tony Lecomber (BNP Group Development Officer). (11)

Nick Griffin of the BNP has met with the National Alliance via the American friends of the British National Party, the main avenue of contact between the BNP and American Neo-Nazis.

This relationship is highlighted by comments made by the leader of the American Friends of the British National Party (AFBNP), Marc Cotterill, “It is not an American fight or a British fight or a German fight. It is a white fight, and we have got to win it.”(12)

Background on the British National Party

Heres a picture of BNP’s Founder, John Tyndall (on left) in Nazi attire in front of a swastika flag. (13)

Out of the public eye, the BNP’s “cadres” make no secret of their fascist sympathies. In a 2002 Channel 4 documentary entitled Young, Nazi, and Proud Mark Collett, the then head of the BNP’s youth organisation and a protege of Griffin, was secretly filmed declaring that “Hitler will live on forever”. Collett endorsed Griffin’s view that an openly Nazi movement was inappropriate to Britain in the early 21st century. But he insisted:

“National Socialism was the best solution for German people in the 1930s…. When people say ‘Do you take any inspiration from that?’, I mean, I honestly can’t understand how a man who’s seen the inner city hell of Britain today can’t look back on that era with a certain nostalgia and think, yeah, those people marching through the streets and all those happy people out in the streets, you know, saluting and everything, was a bad thing … would you prefer your kid growing up in Oldham and Burnley or 1930s Germany?”

In October 2004, when the BNP contested a council by-election in Dagenham, an Evening Standard reporter infiltrated their campaign. He quoted Tony Lecomber, who as we have noted was one of the earliest proponents of the current “modernising” project, expressing similar pro-Nazi sentiments to Collett’s. Lecomber asked: “Do you remember Cabaret with Liza Minnelli, the part where, one by one, the Hitler Youth, our fellas, stand up and start saluting and singing? That is right stirring that is, gets the blood up every time.”

On the eve of the 2005 general election the Yorkshire Evening Post reported details of a video made at a BNP social event “in which its members and supporters sing neo-Nazi songs, praise the leadership of Adolf Hitler’s Third Reich, and give Sieg Heil salutes accompanied by shouts of ‘Auschwitz!’.” One of the songs sung in the video is “a re-write of the Kenny Rogers 1969 chart hit ‘Ruby, don’t take your love to town’, except that the words have been changed to ‘Nigger, get the **** out of my town’.”(14)

bnp quote – Collett said gangs of Asian lads wanted “to wipe out white people”. He added: “I honestly don’t hate asylum seekers – these people are cockroaches and they’re doing what cockroaches do because cockroaches can’t help what they do, they just do it, like cats miaow and dogs bark. They do it because they are what they are and they’ll do what they do. The people I hate are the white politicians who have sold us down the line.”

MSU Student Hate Group Bringing British National Party Leader Nick Griffin to Speak

photo of bnp member nick griffin

Michigan State University’s (MSU) chapter of Young Americans for Freedom–a student group that has been identified as “hate group” by the Southern Poverty Law Center–is bringing Nick Griffin to speak at MSU on Friday. Griffin, who is the leader of the British National Party (http://www.stopthebnp.org.uk/), has a history of holocaust denial and opposition to Muslim immigration is visiting MSU’s campus as part of a fundraising tour. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center:

“Griffin, a well-known Holocaust denier and anti-Semite, has a long history of extremism reaching back into the late 1970s, when he was active in the racist British National Front. In 1998, he was convicted of incitement to racial hatred, a serious offense in Britain. Griffin is also a regular visitor to the U.S. and frequently speaks at extremist events here. A recent example came in February 2006, when he spoke at the biannual conference of the publisher of American Renaissance magazine, a hate group that argues that blacks are more “pathological” and less intelligent than whites. Griffin is also close to former Klan leader David Duke, at whose events he also often speaks. The BNP and Duke’s European Unity and Rights Organization (EURO) share the same Belgian webmaster.”

In response to Griffin’s appearance and the continuing sponsorship of racist and homophobic speakers by MSU’s chapter of Young Americans for Freedom–the group has hosted anti-immigrant Representative Tom Tancredo, Chris Simcox of the Minutemen, Mark Krikorian of the Center for Immigration Studies, and Ryan Sorba–people are organizing in Lansing to oppose Griffin’s talk. The following call to action call to action has been posted on the Michigan Against White Supremacy website:

“Organize Against Nick Griffin

The hate group msu young americans for freedom (yaf) is bringing Nick Griffin of the British National Party to speak on the Michigan State University campus this friday october 26th. Griffin is a white supremacist, holocaust denier, homophobe and all around racist. Griffin has stated that Islam is a “wicked, vicious faith” and that Muslims were turning Britain into a “multi-racial hell hole”(1).

Griffin has called the Holocaust the “Holo-Hoax” and wrote that, I am well aware that orthodox opinion is that 6m Jews were gassed and cremated or turned into soup and lampshades… I have reached the conclusion that the “extermination” tale is a mixture of Allied wartime propaganda, extremely profitable lie, and latter witch-hysteria.’(2)

So people are disgusted but the question is, what are we going to do about it? The University, time and again, refuses to do anything about the hate speech and bigotry that YAF pretends is part on an intellectual debate when the only thing their events do is make people feel less safe and intimidated. The time for begging the university for protection has passed. It is now up to the people, people like us to deal with white supremacists like Griffin and the people who bring him here.
